Booker’s 35 Points Lead Suns to Decisive 133-119 Victory Over Struggling Hornets

The Phoenix Suns, bolstered by the return of Bradley Beal, secured a commanding 133-119 win against the Charlotte Hornets on Friday night, extending the Hornets’ losing streak to 10 games. Devin Booker led the Suns with 35 points, showcasing his scoring prowess in a game that saw Phoenix’s offensive capabilities in full display.

Kevin Durant, following up on his triple-double performance at Houston, contributed 21 points and 11 assists, while Booker also added seven assists. Booker’s efficiency was evident as he shot 10 of 18 from the field and 5 of 7 from the 3-point range. Phoenix’s 60% shooting from behind the arc played a crucial role in their victory.

Beal, back after missing five games due to a sprained ankle, made his presence felt with seven assists, six points, and three rebounds. His return was a significant boost for the Suns, as Booker noted the impact of being at full strength. Beal emphasized the importance of his role in facilitating the team’s offense and was pleased with the collective scoring effort.

Jusuf Nurkic and Eric Gordon were also key contributors for the Suns, with Nurkic notching 24 points and 16 rebounds, and Gordon adding 21 points through impressive 3-point shooting. Grayson also chipped in with 16 points.

The Suns’ victory marks their first back-to-back wins since a seven-game winning streak ended in late November. Suns coach Frank Vogel praised Beal’s performance, highlighting his unselfish play and the team’s potential to achieve something special.

On the other side, the Hornets, still missing key players like LaMelo Ball and Gordon Hayward, saw an outstanding performance from Terry Rozier, who scored 42 points and grabbed eight rebounds. Rookie Brandon Miller added 20 points, but it wasn’t enough to counter the Suns’ offensive onslaught.

Charlotte coach Steve Clifford acknowledged the team’s effort but admitted their inability to stop the Suns. The Hornets’ last win was against Toronto on December 8, and they continue to struggle with consistency and defense.

The game was notable for its high scoring, particularly from the 3-point line, with the teams combining for 41 3-pointers. The Suns’ “Big 3” of Booker, Durant, and Beal playing a full game together was a significant factor in their dominant performance.

Looking ahead, the Hornets will try to break their losing streak at Denver on Monday night, while the Suns host Orlando on Sunday, hoping to build on their rejuvenated form. This win for Phoenix serves as a testament to their depth and offensive firepower, especially with the return of key players like Beal.

Kings Overcome Early Deficit to Defeat Hawks 117-110 in Remarkable Comeback

The Sacramento Kings staged an impressive comeback to overcome a 23-point first-quarter deficit and defeat the Atlanta Hawks 117-110 on Friday night. De’Aaron Fox played a pivotal role in the Kings’ resurgence, scoring 26 of his 31 points after halftime.

The Kings, who had been on a two-game losing streak, found much-needed momentum through Fox’s standout performance. He not only set a personal record with eight 3-pointers but also showcased his ability to turn the game around when it mattered most. Coach Mike Brown highlighted Fox’s performance as indicative of his potential to be a special player in the league.

Domantas Sabonis also contributed significantly with 25 points and 10 rebounds. Trey Lyles and Malik Monk added 19 and 15 points, respectively, providing the depth needed to fuel the comeback. Davion Mitchell, praised by Brown as the defensive player of the game, acknowledged the team’s resilience and hard play throughout the game.

The Hawks, led by Trae Young with 24 points and five steals, and Dejounte Murray with 18 points, initially dominated the game, establishing a 31-8 lead early on. However, their momentum waned, and they struggled in the final quarter, limited to 27% shooting. This shooting slump, coupled with the Hawks not scoring in the final 4:45 and missing their last eight shots, played a significant role in their defeat.

Sacramento’s defense was crucial in their comeback, holding the Hawks to 39% shooting for the game. Jalen Johnson of the Hawks had a standout performance with 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds, but it wasn’t enough to stave off the Kings’ surge.

The Kings closed the game on a 24-5 run, showcasing their determination and ability to capitalize on opportunities. This victory is significant for the Kings, not just in snapping their losing streak but also in demonstrating their capability to recover from a significant deficit and secure a win.

The Kings next face the Grizzlies on Sunday, concluding their three-game road trip, while the Hawks will look to bounce back against the Wizards on the same day. This match serves as a testament to the Kings’ tenacity and skill, marking it as a memorable win in their season.

Brown’s Return Powers Celtics to Edge Raptors 120-118 in a Thrilling Finish

In an exhilarating Friday night clash at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics, led by Jaylen Brown’s stellar 31-point performance, narrowly defeated the Toronto Raptors 120-118. Brown’s return from a one-game absence due to a back injury proved pivotal for the Celtics, who have maintained an impeccable home record.

The game reached a climax when Scottie Barnes of the Raptors tied it at 116 with a 3-pointer with just 47 seconds left on the clock. However, it was Brown’s timely assist to Luke Kornet for a dunk with 32 seconds remaining that gave Boston the edge. The final moments were tense, with Barnes unable to convert a crucial drive and Pascal Siakam of the Raptors missing the second of two free throws in the last seconds, a strategy aimed at securing an offensive rebound and a shot at victory.

Brown’s impact was felt right from the start as he hit 3-pointers on three consecutive possessions in the first quarter, demonstrating his offensive prowess. Additionally, he contributed 10 rebounds, showcasing his all-round capabilities. Despite downplaying the significance of his back injury, Brown’s performance indicated his critical role in the Celtics’ lineup.

Derrick White and Luke Kornet were also significant contributors, with 21 and 20 points respectively. However, the Celtics’ 16 turnovers, which led to 22 points for Toronto, highlighted an area of concern.

The Raptors, led by Barnes with 30 points and Siakam with 28, pushed the Celtics to the limit. Dennis Schroder’s 3-pointer gave Toronto a brief lead in the fourth quarter, signaling their resilience.

Boston, playing without Jayson Tatum, Kristaps Porzingis, and Al Horford, improved their record to 25-6, the best in the league, and remained undefeated at home. Celtics coach Joe Mazzulla expressed his confidence in the team’s depth and character, praising Kornet’s performance in his first start of the season.

The Celtics have now won all three meetings this season against the Raptors and look to extend their winning streak in their next game at San Antonio. The Raptors, meanwhile, face the Detroit Pistons next, hoping to rebound from this narrow defeat. This victory for Boston underscores their depth and ability to win under challenging circumstances, bolstering their position as one of the top teams in the NBA.

Bucks Overcome Deficit to Defeat Cavaliers 119-111, Boosted by Antetokounmpo and Lillard

In a remarkable display of resilience and skill, the Milwaukee Bucks, led by Giannis Antetokounmpo and Damian Lillard, overcame a 15-point deficit to defeat the Cleveland Cavaliers 119-111 on Friday night. The victory, driven by a dominant third-quarter performance, solidifies the Bucks’ position as one of the top teams in the NBA with a 24-8 record.

Antetokounmpo, with a commanding performance of 34 points and 16 rebounds, along with Lillard’s 31 points, 24 of which came in the second half, spearheaded the Bucks’ comeback. The duo scored 14 points each in the pivotal third quarter, where Milwaukee outscored Cleveland 40-21, shifting the game’s momentum decisively in their favor.

Despite Donovan Mitchell’s notable return for the Cavaliers, scoring 34 points with six rebounds and nine assists after missing four games, and Jarrett Allen’s career-high 30 points with 12 rebounds, Cleveland couldn’t sustain their early lead. Malik Beasley and Khris Middleton also contributed significantly to Milwaukee’s victory, with Beasley hitting five 3-pointers and Middleton achieving a season-high 11 assists.

Milwaukee’s defensive strategy, particularly in limiting Cleveland’s 3-point shooting to a season-low 14%, played a crucial role in their victory. Cleveland struggled from beyond the arc, missing 37 of 43 attempts, a factor underscored by Milwaukee coach Adrian Griffin as a key point of emphasis.

Lillard’s impact since joining the Bucks has been substantial, with the guard averaging 26.3 points over the last six games. His ability to take over games, as highlighted by Cavaliers coach J.B. Bickerstaff, posed a significant challenge for Cleveland’s defense, particularly in tandem with Antetokounmpo’s prowess.

The game also saw Allen’s impressive performance, making his first nine shots and contributing 18 points in the first half. However, Antetokounmpo’s versatility and efficiency proved too much for the Cavaliers, despite Allen’s efforts.

The match held additional significance with Cleveland Browns owners Jimmy and Dee Haslam being co-owners of the Bucks.

Looking ahead, the Bucks are set to host Indiana on Monday night, while the Cavaliers face a challenging visit to Toronto on the same night. This win for Milwaukee not only highlights their depth and skill but also demonstrates their ability to overcome significant challenges on the court.

Orlando Magic Outlast New York Knicks 117-108 in Front of Record Home Crowd

The Orlando Magic secured a hard-fought 117-108 victory over the New York Knicks at home on Friday night, buoyed by stellar performances from Franz Wagner and Paolo Banchero. Wagner led with 32 points and nine rebounds, while Banchero added 29 points and 10 rebounds, playing crucial roles in holding off a late surge from the Knicks.

The game was played in front of a franchise-record home crowd of 19,587, who witnessed Jalen Suggs contribute 21 points and six assists to the Magic’s cause. The Knicks, despite a strong individual performance from Julius Randle, who scored 38 points along with 12 rebounds and six assists, struggled to find their rhythm in the early stages.

RJ Barrett, New York’s forward, acknowledged the team’s need for a better start, despite their improved second-half performance. Jalen Brunson added 20 points for the Knicks, but coach Tom Thibodeau expressed frustration with the officiating, emphasizing Brunson’s frequent encounters with physical defense.

The Magic credited rookie guard Anthony Black with limiting Brunson to 4-for-15 shooting, praising his defensive prowess. Banchero faced a tough task in guarding the physically imposing Randle, describing him as a “freight train.”

Both teams struggled from the 3-point line, with New York shooting 6 for 30 and Orlando 7 for 33. The Magic took control in the second quarter, spearheaded by Wagner and Banchero, going on an 18-4 run. Their lead expanded to 20 points in the third quarter, setting a margin too challenging for the Knicks to close.

Despite a late-game surge from Randle, Barrett, and Brunson, the Magic managed to maintain their lead, with Suggs making crucial plays in the final minute to seal the victory. Banchero highlighted the importance of withstanding the Knicks’ late run and closing out the game effectively.

The Knicks, who came into the game leading the NBA in total rebound percentage, were outrebounded 49-40 by the Magic, a key factor in their defeat. Looking ahead, the Knicks face a quick turnaround with a game against Indiana on Saturday night, while the Magic prepare for a matchup against Phoenix on Sunday.

Wizards Triumph Over Nets 110-104 in a Thrilling Encounter at Capital One Arena

In a nail-biting Friday night showdown at Capital One Arena, the Washington Wizards secured a much-needed 110-104 victory over the Brooklyn Nets, marking a significant boost in their season. Kyle Kuzma led the charge with an impressive 26 points, while Deni Avdija contributed a stellar double-double with 21 points, 13 rebounds, and six assists.

The game saw numerous lead changes and ties, reflecting a fierce contest between the two sides. The Wizards, who had been struggling with a three-game losing streak, found their rhythm against the Nets, thanks to significant contributions from their key players. Tyus Jones added 12 points, and Mike Muscala came off the bench to provide an essential 11 points, including a crucial 3-pointer that helped the Wizards regain the lead in the final quarter.

For Brooklyn, Spencer Dinwiddie put up 17 points, eight rebounds, and six assists, while Mikal Bridges scored 19 points. Nic Claxton’s double-double and Cam Johnson’s 16 points highlighted the Nets’ effort, but it wasn’t enough to overcome the Wizards’ surge in the final minutes.

The game’s intensity was palpable, with Avdija comparing the atmosphere to a playoff game. The Wizards showed resilience, especially in the second half. After trailing by one at the half, the Nets opened the third quarter with an 8-0 run. However, Kuzma’s re-entry into the game in the fourth quarter proved decisive for Washington. His nine points in a critical phase helped the Wizards pull away from a 98-97 deficit, leading to a standing ovation from the home fans.

Brooklyn’s coach, Jacque Vaughn, reflected on missed opportunities and the need for better execution in crucial game phases. Meanwhile, Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. had to navigate the absence of Danilo Gallinari, who missed the game due to back spasms.

The Wizards’ victory provides a glimmer of hope as they look to build momentum. They next host the Atlanta Hawks on Sunday, while the Nets face a challenging visit to Oklahoma City. This win not only breaks the Wizards’ losing streak but also injects confidence into the team as they gear up for the upcoming challenges in their season.

Toews’ Late Goal Propels Avalanche to 2-1 Victory Over Blues

Devon Toews’ late third-period goal lifted the Colorado Avalanche to a narrow 2-1 win against the St. Louis Blues at Enterprise Center on Friday. Toews’ decisive slap shot from the left point, which deflected off Blues defenseman Justin Faulk, secured the win for Colorado. The Avalanche (22-11-3) extended their point streak to four games (3-0-1), with goaltender Alexandar Georgiev making 30 saves in a stellar performance.

The game was tightly contested, with both teams displaying solid defensive play. Avalanche’s Nathan MacKinnon saw his impressive 19-game point streak come to an end, falling just short of tying the franchise record. Ryan Johansen contributed a goal and an assist for Colorado, providing much-needed offense in a game where chances were at a premium.

For the St. Louis Blues (18-16-1), Robert Thomas was the lone scorer, tying the game at 1-1 in the first period with a skillful short-handed goal. Despite a strong showing, Jordan Binnington’s 21 saves weren’t enough to secure a win for St. Louis, who had their three-game winning streak snapped.

Both teams had their moments of excitement, with Colorado having a goal overturned early in the first period due to goaltender interference and the Blues’ Binnington stopping a penalty shot by Colorado’s Cale Makar in the third. However, it was the Avalanche who capitalized on their opportunities, particularly in the closing stages of the game.

Coach Drew Bannister of the Blues praised his team’s effort, noting that they competed well and deserved a better result. Colorado’s coach Jared Bednar was pleased with his team’s defensive improvement as the game progressed and highlighted Georgiev’s crucial role in the win.

The Avalanche’s victory was a testament to their resilience and ability to capitalize on key moments, while the Blues showcased their competitiveness, indicating a closely fought matchup. As the teams move forward, Colorado’s continued point streak and St. Louis’ response in their next game will be closely watched.

Tyler Johnson’s power-play goal late in the third period had tied the game for Chicago, setting the stage for an intense finish.

Joe Pavelski and Jamie Benn also contributed to the Stars’ victory, each scoring a goal and providing an assist, while Jason Robertson added two assists. Goalie Scott Wedgewood saved 25 shots for Dallas (21-9-4), who have now won six of their last eight games.

Chicago (11-22-2), despite the loss, showed resilience, especially after being down by two goals in the first period. Johnson scored twice for the Blackhawks, and Jason Dickinson and Cole Guttman each added a goal and an assist. Goaltender Petr Mrazek made 30 saves.

Hintz’s impact was immediate, as he scored a power-play goal in the first period, kickstarting the Stars’ comeback. Pavelski’s deflection and another quick goal by Hintz in the second period kept the momentum with Dallas. Benn’s third-period goal extended the Stars’ lead before Chicago rallied to tie the game, leading to Hintz’s overtime heroics.

Johnson’s performance for the Blackhawks was notable, scoring the first goal of the game and the critical equalizer in the third period. His efforts, combined with those of Dickinson and Guttman, kept Chicago competitive throughout the match.

Dallas coach Peter DeBoer praised his team for their resilience and composure, especially after falling behind early in the game. Chicago coach Luke Richardson acknowledged the Blackhawks’ strong start but cited a defensive retreat in the second period that ultimately led to their defeat.

In the end, it was Hintz’s outstanding play that clinched the win for the Stars, demonstrating their ability to mount comebacks and solidifying their strong position in recent games. For the Blackhawks, the narrow loss highlighted their potential but also underlined areas needing improvement.

Islanders Rebound with Dominant 5-1 Win Over Capitals

The New York Islanders bounced back impressively from a recent 7-0 defeat, overpowering the Washington Capitals with a 5-1 victory at UBS Arena on Friday. Jean-Gabriel Pageau led the charge with a stellar performance, scoring two goals and adding two assists. Julien Gauthier also shone brightly, netting two goals and an assist.

Goalkeeper Ilya Sorokin was nearly flawless, stopping 26 shots and narrowly missing a shutout, conceding a goal only in the final seconds. Bo Horvat facilitated the offense with two assists, contributing to the Islanders’ (17-9-9) assertive response after their heavy loss to the Pittsburgh Penguins.

The Capitals (17-11-5), enduring their third consecutive loss, struggled to find their rhythm. Nicolas Aube-Kubel managed to score a late goal, but it wasn’t enough to challenge the Islanders’ dominance. Washington faced an early setback when goalie Charlie Lindgren exited with an upper-body injury, forcing Darcy Kuemper into action, who ended up conceding four goals.

Pageau’s impact was particularly notable, as his one-timer opened the scoring in the second period, setting the tone for the game. Noah Dobson soon followed with another goal, amplifying the Islanders’ momentum.

Gauthier’s back-to-back goals in the third period within just 18 seconds highlighted the Islanders’ offensive outburst, with Pageau’s second goal further cementing their lead.

Washington’s challenges were compounded by the loss of defenseman Martin Fehervary early in the first period following a collision and fall. Coach Spencer Carbery expressed concern over the injuries and acknowledged the difficulty of losing a player so early in the match.

The Islanders’ victory was a statement of resilience and a return to form, showcasing their ability to recover and excel even after tough losses. For the Capitals, the defeat adds to their recent struggles, emphasizing the need for adjustments to regain their winning ways.

Devils’ Offensive Onslaught Overwhelms Senators 6-2

The New Jersey Devils, led by Jesper Bratt’s one goal and three assists, stormed to a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators at Canadian Tire Centre on Friday. Nico Daws, making his season debut, saved 25 shots, playing a key role in the Devils’ win.

The Devils (19-13-2) showcased their offensive prowess, with significant contributions from Jack Hughes and Luke Hughes, each tallying a goal and two assists. Tyler Toffoli and Dawson Mercer also found the back of the net, helping the team secure their third consecutive victory after a rough patch.

For Ottawa (13-18-0), Drake Batherson and Jacob Bernard-Docker managed to score, but their efforts fell short against New Jersey’s relentless attack. Joonas Korpisalo’s 24 saves weren’t enough to keep the Senators afloat.

New Jersey’s power play efficiency was on full display, converting 2 of their 4 chances, while Ottawa struggled, failing to capitalize on their four power play opportunities. The Devils’ penalty kill was notably effective, thwarting all the Senators’ attempts to score with the man advantage.

Batherson’s early goal had given the Senators a lead, but it was short-lived as the Devils quickly equalized and then dominated the game. Daws, returning after a six-month absence due to hip surgery, displayed impressive form, bolstering the Devils’ defense.

Jack and Luke Hughes’ performances were particularly noteworthy, as they became the first siblings to each score three or more points in a game since the Sedin twins achieved the feat in 2017 for the Vancouver Canucks. Bratt’s milestone of reaching 200 career assists added to the Devils’ night of achievements.

The win is a significant morale booster for the Devils, as they continue to push for a playoff spot. The Senators, on the other hand, face the challenge of bouncing back from this heavy defeat and rediscovering their form.

Reinhart’s Double Helps Panthers Edge Rangers 4-3 in Close Contest

Sam Reinhart’s two-goal performance, supported by Aleksander Barkov’s three assists, propelled the Florida Panthers to a narrow 4-3 victory over the New York Rangers at Amerant Bank Arena on Friday. The Panthers (21-12-2) extended their winning streak to three games, with key contributions from Carter Verhaeghe and Matthew Tkachuk.

Despite Barkov briefly leaving the game in the third period following a hit from Alexis Lafrenière, the Panthers managed to regain the lead and secure the win. Sergei Bobrovsky’s 31 saves were crucial in fending off the Rangers’ offensive efforts.

The Rangers (24-9-1), led by Artemi Panarin, Will Cuylle, and Mika Zibanejad, put up a strong fight. Zibanejad’s short-handed goal tied the game in the third period, but Verhaeghe’s subsequent goal for Florida at 13:37 proved decisive. Jonathan Quick’s 28 saves for New York were not enough to prevent the loss.

The game showcased high-quality play from both teams, with the Panthers demonstrating resilience and skill to overcome the Eastern Conference-leading Rangers. Barkov’s assists tied him with Jonathan Huberdeau for the most in Panthers history, highlighting his pivotal role in the team’s success.

Florida’s win, marked by Reinhart’s impressive performance and critical saves by Bobrovsky, underlines their capability to challenge top teams in the league. The Rangers, despite the setback, showed their potential, with Zibanejad extending his point streak to nine games and contributing significantly to the team’s offense.

For Nashville, Gustav Nyquist and Filip Forsberg each delivered two goals and an assist. Despite their efforts, the Predators (19-16-1) could not prevent their third consecutive loss. Saros, facing 18 shots, made crucial saves but couldn’t stop Raymond’s final blow.

The game was a rollercoaster of scoring. Dylan Larkin opened the scoring with a shorthanded goal for Detroit, only for Forsberg and Nyquist to respond for Nashville. Walman’s and DeBrincat’s goals in the third period were pivotal for the Red Wings, but Nyquist’s equalizer set the stage for the overtime drama.

Detroit’s coach reshuffled his forwards to balance the lines, a strategy that paid off with crucial goals in the third period. The win showcased the Red Wings’ depth and ability to adapt under pressure.

Forsberg’s performance was a highlight, tying a record for multigoal games among active Sweden-born NHL players. Nyquist continued his strong form against his former team, and Raymond’s game-winner added to his growing reputation as a clutch performer for Detroit.

Adam Fantilli played a pivotal role, equalizing late in the third period to force overtime. Goaltenders Elvis Merzlikins and Spencer Martin shared duties in the net for Columbus, with Merzlikins exiting after the first period due to illness and Martin stepping in to make 16 saves.

The Blue Jackets’ coach, Pascal Vincent, praised the team’s escalating intensity and identified this win as a much-needed morale booster against a formidable opponent. Columbus, with a 12-18-7 record, showed resilience and improvement, crucial for their progress.

For the Maple Leafs, who now stand at 17-9-7, Auston Matthews, Mitchell Marner, and William Nylander each contributed a goal and an assist. Morgan Rielly added three assists, while Ilya Samsonov guarded the net with 15 saves. Despite the loss, Toronto’s coach Sheldon Keefe acknowledged their dominance in the game, attributing the defeat to costly mistakes and a need for better support for their goaltender.

The contest was a rollercoaster, with Marner and Matthews giving Toronto an early lead, only for Sillinger and Gaunce to narrow the gap for Columbus. The Leafs’ Nylander and Robertson extended their lead, but Voronkov and Johnson’s efforts brought the Blue Jackets level. Tavares seemed to have sealed the win for Toronto with a late goal, but Fantilli’s stunning equalizer set the stage for Gaudreau’s overtime magic.

The victory was a testament to Columbus’s fighting spirit, overcoming a two-goal deficit to clinch a thrilling win. Gaudreau’s performance was a highlight, showcasing his skill and poise under pressure. The result serves as a reminder of the unpredictable nature of hockey and the importance of resilience.

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont awarded Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire

World Rugby Chairman Sir Bill Beaumont has expressed his gratitude and says that he is “honoured and humbled” after being awarded the Knight Grand Cross of the Order of the British Empire for services to rugby on the international stage in His Majesty The King’s New Year’s Honours list.

The honour is in recognition of a lifetime spent in service to the betterment of rugby on and off the field for Beaumont and follows the awarding of a Knighthood in the New Year’s Honours list in 2018. The Knight Grand Cross is the highest rank in the Most Excellent Order of The British Empire.

Recognition comes at an exciting and important time for Beaumont and the sport. Elected Chairman of World Rugby in 2016, Beaumont wasted no time in acting on his mandate in cementing rugby as an accessible, relevant and player welfare-led sport. Now in his second term, he has presided over a period of global growth and advancement, particularly among young people and women in emerging rugby nations, and in new and accessible formats of the game reaching new audiences. Much of this has been achieved against the unprecedented challenge of the global coronavirus pandemic.

Determined to ensure the strong foundations are in place to support a growing global game, Beaumont has driven transformational governance reform that has seen an expansion of national union, region, gender and player inclusivity across the sport’s highest decision-making body, the World Rugby Council and its committee structures.

An expansionist, Beaumont has also presided over record-breaking and transformational men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups in Japan (2019), New Zealand (2022) and France (2023) respectively. He has also presided over reform of the Rugby World Cup hosting model, paving the way for greater long-term financial certainty, and confirming the expansion of the women’s Rugby World Cup from 12 to 16 teams at the 2025 edition in England; and from 20 to 24 teams at the next men’s edition in Australia in 2027.

The most recent achievement came towards the end of 2023, rugby’s 200th anniversary year, with confirmation of long-term international calendar harmony and new competition structures that provided greater opportunity for emerging nations, while providing financial certainty for all unions. As a former player with a passion for grassroots rugby, key decisions have been taken with player welfare and wellbeing at heart, with advancements in head injury research, management and prevention viewed as sport-leading.

A family and rugby man through and through, World Rugby Hall of Fame inductee Beaumont can often be found at his beloved Fylde Rugby Club or watching son Josh play for Sale Sharks. He has always championed the community game and has made it his mission as Chairman of World Rugby and formerly as Chairman of the RFU to make the sport as accessible and relevant to play and support as possible at all levels.

For many fans Beaumont is best-known for his playing exploits. He made his debut for England in 1975, going on to win 34 caps and leading England to their first Grand Slam for 33 years in 1980. He also captained the British and Irish Lions and later managed them on the tour to New Zealand in 2005.

Beaumont said: “I am humbled and honoured to receive this accolade from His Majesty the King. I have always viewed my work as a rugby administrator as that of a guardian, driven by a passion to do the very best I can for rugby, its players, fans, and all those who give up their time to volunteer at grassroots level around the world. This accolade is as much recognition for our rugby family as a whole, and all who work tirelessly in the sport, as it is for me.

“Rugby has been my life for more than half a century and has given me so much joy as a player, a father and grandfather to rugby-playing sons and a granddaughter, and as an administrator. I am very fortunate to be in a position to give back to the sport I love, and I am as passionate now about rugby now as I was when representing Fylde, Lancashire, England or the British and Irish Lions.

“Rugby continues to transform, progress and advance as a sport and a movement and I am proud of what we have achieved in recent years. From exceptional men’s and women’s Rugby World Cups and historic international calendar transformation to the exciting advancement of the women’s game, we will never stand still in making the sport the best it can be to all its participants and fans. To that end, I am particularly proud of the strong progress we have made in the priority area of player welfare and I remain unswerving in my commitment to making rugby even more safe, accessible and relevant. We are on a very exciting journey with a very bright future.

“I have said it many times – in my opinion, rugby is the ultimate team sport – a sport with strong values and where the team is always greater than the individual. I have been blessed to have played and worked with incredible people along the way who share the same passion for the betterment of the sport as I do. There is one person who has been at my side, a constant support from my playing days to now, my wife Hilary. She is my inspiration and rock.”

Beaumont was awarded a Knighthood in 2018, having previously been appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in 2008 and Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1982. He is also Deputy Lieutenant of Lancashire.

In round 11, Daniil Dubov was playing as White against Ian Nepomniachtchi. The game in question lasted 13 moves: 1.Nf3 Nf6 2.Nd4 Nd5 3.Nb3 Nb6 4.Nc3 Nc6 5.Ne4 Ne5 6.Ng5 Ng4 7.Nf3 Nf6 8.Ng1 Ng8 9.Nc5 Nc4 10.Na4 Na5 11.Nc3 Nc6 12.Nb1 Nb8 13.Nf3, and they agreed on a draw in the following position:

FIDE

The arbiters analyzed the moves, and, after round 12, the Chief Arbiter of the tournament, Ivan Syrovy, made the decision to reduce the points both players scored in the game. Reasoning his decision, Chief Arbiter Syrovy said: “In my eyes both players are responsible for it, I consider they prearranged the result of the game. My opinion is based on the moves they played”.

Grandmasters Ian Nepomniachtchi and Daniil Dubov objected to the decision, prompting a referral to the Appeals Committee.

A video which was published on Twitter appears to suggest the two grandmasters discussing the prearranged draw.

Late in the evening of December 28th to 29th, local time in Samarkand, the Appeals Committee unanimously voted (3/3) to reject Ian Nepomniachtchi’s appeal and uphold the decision made by the arbiter, Ivan Syrovy.

Before the above case, there was an appeal after the sixth round by American Andrew Hong who lost to Yu Yangyi from China. Hong lost on time but claimed that the clock was not working properly when he pressed it. The Appeals Committee examined the clock and did not find any evidence of malfunctioning. The Committee ruled that GM Hong “did try to push the clock, but failed to do it properly and [the] clock’s position remained unchanged” and his appeal was rejected. This appeal delayed round seven for an hour.

Here follows a report from the first day of the Blitz.

The Open Blitz

The first day of the Blitz in the Open tournament saw Vladislav Artemiev emerge as the main contender for the top place. He became the sole leader after defeating R Pragnanandhaa in round six. Round seven saw Artemiev having a tranquil draw with Magnus Carlsen, who trailed by half a point due to a draw in round two against the 300-points-lower-rated Jakhongir Vakhidov from Uzbekistan. A quick draw with Dubov followed in round eight. Subsequently, in round nine, Artemiev engaged in a gruelling battle against Ian Nepomniachtchi, resulting in yet another split point. At this juncture, Carlsen and Dubov caught up with Artemiev, all three sharing the lead with 7.5 points each. Then tragedy struck – Artemiev erred in the opening as Black against Sarin and was forced to defend a bad position, which he ultimately lost. In round 11, however, he made a comeback against Sjugirov to emerge as first among the tournament leaders again. In round twelve, Artemiev decided to slow down and made a quick draw with Erigaisi.

Artemiev is currently leading a group of six players with nine points, which includes defending Blitz Champion Carlsen, Vachier-Lagrave, and Indians Sarin, Erigaisi, and Alexander Riazantsev.

Dubov and Nepomniachtchi have 8.5 points, following the decision of FIDE to strip each of them of half a point from the game they drew.

Meanwhile, Magnus Carlsen registered six draws and seven wins on the first day. In round 12, he faced Ian Nepomniachtchi, whom he defeated twice in the match for the World Champion title. Despite an intense game with both sides transitioning to an endgame while in time trouble, a crucial imprecision by Carlsen provided Nepomniachtchi with a significant opportunity, which he missed, resulting in an immediate draw.

Anish Giri, aiming to secure a place in the 2024 Candidates, started strongly in the Blitz after a slow start in the Rapid. With five points after six rounds, he was among the second tier of players, trailing the leader by just one point. However, from round nine onwards, Giri encountered setbacks. His loss as White to Dubov in round nine due to a misplay in the middlegame significantly weakened his position. Although he had an advantage against Pragnanandhaa in round 10, he allowed it to slip into a draw. Rounds 11 and 12 ended in draws with Murzin and a loss to Aleksandr Shimanov, respectively, marking Giri’s second loss of the day with the white pieces.

The Women’s Blitz

Valentina Gunina, a one-time gold and two-time silver medalist in the World Blitz, made an impressive start in the Women’s tournament. Leading with 8.5/9 after day one, she replicated her previous performance from the Almaty 2022 World Blitz by securing the top spot on day one yet again.

Gunina started with a remarkable streak of seven consecutive victories (including against the reigning Women’s Blitz Champion, Bibisara Assaubayeva) and became the sole leader from round six. Her first draw came in round eight with India’s Harika Dronavalli. At this stage, Anastasia Bodnaruk, fresh off her Women’s Rapid win, ascended to second place, trailing by just half a point with 7/8. Challenged in the final round of the day, Gunina clinched a decisive victory against Bodnaruk with the black pieces, finishing the day with 8.5/9, a point and a half ahead of her closest competition.

Reflecting on her performance at the end of the first day, Gunina remarked: “I feel tired, but I [would] feel more tired not playing chess.” She pointed out that last year in the World Blitz, she was also the leader after day one but then lost four games in a row on the second day. “One day, you can play great; the other day, you can lose everything”.

Asked whether having good time control is her main weapon for staying on top, Gunina replied with a puzzling smile: “Let me tell you tomorrow” [when the Blitz Championship finishes].

The start of the Women’s Blitz saw an excellent comeback for the former Women’s World Champion Alexandra Kosteniuk, who finished the Women’s Rapid with just 6/11, midway through the standings. With five victories, she emerged as the leader in round five. However, Kosteniuk picked up just two points in the remaining four rounds of the day, having lost to Gunina (in round six, a direct encounter for the top position) and in round eight (to Bodnaruk).

With seven points, Kosteniuk leads a group of five players chasing Gunina: Dronavalli, Bodnaruk, Garifullina and another former Women’s World Blitz Champion, Kateryna Lagno. Kateryna started the World Blitz with a draw and then stumbled in round five against Polina Shuvalova and made another draw in round seven.

The defending Women’s Blitz Champion, Bibisara Assaubayeva, completed the first day with 6/9. She lost two consecutive games – to Gunina in round four and Bodnaruk in round five. Towards the end of the day, Assaubayeva lost speed – she drew with Divya and allowed Goryachkina to save a significantly worse position.

PKL 10: In first home game, Pardeep Narwal’s SUPER 10 takes UP Yoddhas over the line against Bengaluru Bulls

NOIDA, December 29: The UP Yoddhas broke a four-match winless streak as they beat the Bengaluru Bulls 34-33 at the Noida Indoor Stadium in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match on Friday. Despite a slow start Pardeep Narwal registered 10 points to help the homes side over the line in a game of fine margins.

The Yoddhas hoped that home court advantage would turn their flagging fortunes around, but in the opening minutes it seemed unlikely. In the early going, their talisman Pardeep Narwal looked to be suffering, registering his first point on his ninth raid of the evening. Fortunately, the Bulls were facing struggles of their own. Both teams’ weaknesses were exposed on a series of DO OR DIE raids midway through the half.

The game came to life in the final minute of the half, as Pardeep Narwal followed up on his first successful raid with two more in succession, reducing the Bulls to a single player just as the whistle blew for the break.

The Yoddhas cleaned up right at the start of the second half to inflict the first ALL OUT and take an 18-14 lead. This didn’t deter the Bulls though, who kept coming at the Yoddhas, and made sure they could never extend their lead. Raid was matched by raid and tackles by smarter tackles. Saurabh Nandal in particular was the architect of the Bulls defence having pulled off an exceptional 4 successful tackles from 5 attempts as the game went into the final five minutes.

Some clinical play saw the Yoddhas inflict a second ALL OUT on the Bulls to take a 33-26 lead with three minutes to go. Narwal wrapped up a SUPER 10 with a minute of the game remaining, but the Bulls refused to give up, and came close to registering an all important all out in the dying seconds. As it was though, Sushil couldn’t get both the Yoddhas players out to leave the Bulls short by one point.

PKL 10: Manjeet, Krishan shine as Patna Pirates defeat Haryana Steelers by 13 points on Noida leg’s opening day

NOIDA, December 29th: Patna Pirates’ stellar all-round performance led the 3-time champions to a comfortable 46-33 victory over Haryana Steelers in the Pro Kabaddi League Season 10 match at the Noida Indoor Stadium on Friday. Manjeet [13 points] and Krishan Dhull [5 points] were the best performers for the Pirates.

The game began on a cagey note as only 5 points were scored in the opening 5 minutes. The Steelers led 4-1 and worked it to an 8-3 lead when they reduced the Pirates to just one man.

But it was not the for the Steelers as Sachin came to the Pirates’ rescue by tagging two defenders to prevent the ALL OUT. He then followed it up with a brilliant solo tackle on Vinay to inflict a SUPER TACKLE. The Pirates trailed 7-8 at the 10th-minute mark and got on level terms 3 minutes later when the skipper Neeraj Kumar executed a SUPER TACKLE.Sudhakar M produced a moment of magic in the 15th minute when he twisted and turned past Jaideep Dahiya and Ashish and the ALL OUT came right after as the Pirates led 15-10. Shivam Patare gave the Steelers some respite, but it was the 3-time champs who went into the interval with a 3-point lead at 18-15.

The Pirates’ defence was on song in the second half as they got 6 tackle points in 10 minutes, which paved the way for a second ALL OUT. Pirates’ lead raider Sachin also contributed with 2 tackle points, as Ankit’s dash on Shivam in the 29th minute saw the Pirates inflict the second ALL OUT and storm ahead to a 30-21 lead.

It was pure domination thereon from the Pirates as Manjeet got rid of both Mohit Nandal and Mohit to bring up a Super 10 against his former team and then Krishan trapped Ashish to complete his High 5. That powered the Pirates to inflict a 3rd ALL OUT in the 36th minute and they took a massive 16-point lead at 41-25.

Steelers’ Rahul Sethpal completed a High 5 when he got Chinese Taipei’s Zheng-Wei Chen in an ankle hold and Vinay also went past the Super 10 mark, but it was too little too late as the Pirates cruised to a 13-point win.eason 10 of the Pro Kabaddi League will be broadcast live on the Star Sports Network and for free on Disney+ hotstar.

Oilers Dominate Sharks with Four-Goal Opening, Clinch 5-0 Victory

The Edmonton Oilers showcased their offensive prowess with a stunning four-goal first period, setting the tone for a commanding 5-0 win over the San Jose Sharks at SAP Center on Thursday. This victory marks the Oilers’ third consecutive win, boosting their record to 16-15-1.

Oilers coach Kris Knoblauch expressed satisfaction with the team’s progress, emphasizing the importance of continual improvement to stay competitive in the playoff race. The Oilers’ early surge in the game underscored their determination to climb up the standings.

Ryan McLeod, Zach Hyman, and Evan Bouchard led the scoring charge, each contributing a goal and an assist. Darnell Nurse provided two assists, helping to orchestrate the Oilers’ relentless attack. Goaltender Stuart Skinner played a pivotal role, stopping all 25 shots he faced to secure his second shutout of the season.

Skinner acknowledged the Sharks’ offensive capabilities but was pleased with how the Oilers managed to contain them effectively. His solid goaltending was a key factor in Edmonton’s defensive success.

For the Sharks, rookie goaltender Magnus Chrona had a challenging NHL debut, conceding four goals on 12 shots before being replaced by Kaapo Kahkonen at the start of the second period. The Sharks, with a record of 9-24-3, are in the midst of a seven-game losing streak, during which they’ve been outscored 33-10.

The game’s critical moments came early, with McLeod opening the scoring just a minute into the first period. Hyman then doubled the lead, capitalizing on a neutral-zone turnover to score his 20th goal of the season. Bouchard and Leon Draisaitl added to the tally, leaving the Sharks reeling under the Oilers’ relentless offensive pressure.

Sharks defenseman Kyle Burroughs reflected on the disappointing start for Chrona, acknowledging the team’s failure to support their goaltender. Tomas Hertl of the Sharks also lamented their inability to convert chances into goals, highlighting the Oilers’ efficiency in capitalizing on opportunities.

Ryan Nugent-Hopkins added the fifth goal for the Oilers in the second period, further extending their lead and sealing the game’s outcome.

Coach David Quinn of the Sharks recognized some positive aspects of their play but emphasized the need for better defensive performance and goal conversion.

The win is a significant boost for the Oilers, demonstrating their potential to be a formidable force in the league when firing on all cylinders.

Golden Knights Edge Kings 3-2, Snap Four-Game Skid

In a hard-fought contest, the Vegas Golden Knights managed to snap their four-game losing streak with a 3-2 victory over the Los Angeles Kings at T-Mobile Arena on Thursday. Key contributions came from Jack Eichel, Michael Amadio, and William Karlsson, while goalie Logan Thompson turned away 32 shots.

The game began with Eichel putting the Golden Knights ahead with a perfectly executed wrist shot in the first period, thanks to a skillful pass from Ivan Barbashev. In the second period, Amadio doubled the lead, showcasing his offensive prowess by eluding the defense and beating Cam Talbot with a clever forehand lift.

Los Angeles attempted a comeback with Anze Kopitar narrowing the gap by deflecting a pass from Adrian Kempe. However, Karlsson restored Vegas’s two-goal cushion with a sharp one-timer, capitalizing on a pass from Paul Cotter.

The Kings pushed hard in the third period, and Trevor Moore managed to bring them within one with a late goal, but it wasn’t enough to overturn Vegas’s lead.

The game was not just a regular-season win for Vegas; it set a positive tone as they prepare for the 2024 Discover NHL Winter Classic against the Seattle Kraken at T-Mobile Park in Seattle. Coach Bruce Cassidy emphasized the significance of the Winter Classic, looking forward to the unique experiences and memories it will bring.

Despite the loss, the Kings displayed a strong defensive effort, as noted by coach Todd McLellan, who lamented the types of goals conceded. Kopitar echoed McLellan’s sentiments, acknowledging the need for sharper play.

The Golden Knights’ win was a showcase of their resilience and ability to bounce back, with Logan Thompson’s impressive goaltending playing a crucial role. As they look forward to the Winter Classic, this victory gives Vegas a much-needed boost of confidence and momentum.

Flyers Snap Canucks’ Nine-Game Point Streak with 4-1 Victory in Vancouver

The Philadelphia Flyers delivered a stunning performance, scoring three goals within a rapid 2:06 span in the second period, to dismantle the Vancouver Canucks’ nine-game point streak with a decisive 4-1 win at Rogers Arena on Thursday.

Egor Zamula, Sean Walker, and Joel Farabee were the catalysts for the Flyers (19-11-4), contributing significantly to the team’s eleventh win in their last twelve games (8-1-3). Farabee’s goal and assist were particularly crucial in steering the team to victory. The Flyers’ patient gameplay and seizing of opportunities were evident throughout the match.

Samuel Ersson, starting in goal for the Flyers, saved 18 of 19 shots before leaving early in the third period due to dehydration. His replacement, Carter Hart, made eight saves, helping to preserve the win. Coach John Tortorella praised both goalies for their performance, particularly noting Hart’s outstanding play under pressure.

Teddy Blueger was the lone scorer for the Canucks (23-10-3), who suffered their first regulation loss since early December. Goalie Casey DeSmith made 21 saves but couldn’t fend off the Flyers’ determined offense.

The game’s turning point came in the second period when the Flyers erupted with three quick goals. Zamula’s low point shot opened the scoring, followed by Walker’s one-timer and Farabee’s breakaway goal, capitalizing on a turnover by the Canucks.

Blueger gave the Canucks some hope with a goal early in the third period, but the Flyers’ Garnet Hathaway dashed any comeback aspirations with a short-handed goal, making it 4-1.

This match was a testament to the Flyers’ resilience and strategic play, particularly after the holiday break. The Canucks, despite their recent success, were unable to match the intensity and precision of the Flyers, leading to the end of their impressive point streak.

In summary, the Flyers’ efficient and timely scoring, combined with solid goaltending, was too much for the Canucks, resulting in a well-deserved victory for Philadelphia.

LeBron James Leads Lakers to Decisive 133-112 Win Over Struggling Hornets

LOS ANGELES – LeBron James, on the verge of his 39th birthday, delivered a masterful performance with 17 points and 11 assists, guiding the Los Angeles Lakers to a dominant 133-112 victory over the Charlotte Hornets on Thursday night. Anthony Davis complemented James with 26 points and eight rebounds, as the Lakers sent the Hornets to their ninth consecutive loss.

The Lakers, who had won just three games out of nine since their victory in the NBA’s inaugural In-Season Tournament, found their rhythm against the Hornets. A remarkable 41-point third quarter, led by Rui Hachimura and James, was pivotal in establishing a commanding lead. Hachimura, who scored 17 points, and James, with a 12-point contribution in the quarter, were instrumental in the Lakers’ surge.

Coach Darvin Ham seized the opportunity to rest James and Davis in the final quarter, a luxury afforded by the team’s substantial lead. This rest was particularly beneficial for Davis, who emphasized the importance of conserving energy ahead of back-to-back games in Minnesota and New Orleans.

James, despite being the NBA’s oldest player, continues to defy age with his exceptional play in his 21st season. His leadership and ability to orchestrate the offense were evident, especially in the third quarter. Davis praised James’s game intelligence and his knack for making great reads.

D’Angelo Russell contributed 16 points, including the 1,300th three-pointer of his career, while Austin Reaves added 16 points and provided a highlight with a stylish move past Terry Rozier. Reaves expressed confidence in the team’s potential, emphasizing the importance of establishing a clear identity.

The Hornets, led by Miles Bridges with 20 points and Rozier with 18, struggled to keep pace with the Lakers, especially in the second half. Rookie Brandon Miller, who scored 17 points, highlighted the need for better defense without fouling. The absence of LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward, and Mark Williams due to injuries compounded Charlotte’s challenges.

Coach Steve Clifford of the Hornets acknowledged the team’s hard work but lamented the timing of their injuries during a tough stretch of games. The Hornets managed to stay competitive in the first half but faltered against the Lakers’ zone defense after the break.

The Lakers, with their ninth different starting lineup combination in 32 games, demonstrated versatility and depth. The team hopes to maintain the health of James and Davis, who have missed just five games combined this season.

Upcoming Games

The Charlotte Hornets face a challenging road ahead, with their next game against the Phoenix Suns on Friday night. The Los Angeles Lakers, buoyed by this emphatic win, will travel to Minnesota to face the Timberwolves on Saturday night, looking to build on their recent success.

Herro Leads Shorthanded Heat to Victory Over Warriors, 114-102

SAN FRANCISCO – Tyler Herro’s standout performance, featuring 26 points and seven rebounds, propelled the Miami Heat to a 114-102 win over the Golden State Warriors on Thursday night. Despite missing key players, including star forward Jimmy Butler, the Heat secured their fourth consecutive victory, commencing their five-game West Coast tour on a high note.

The Heat were without several key players: Butler due to a strained left calf, Kyle Lowry with soreness, Caleb Martin nursing a sprained right ankle, and Josh Richardson suffering from back discomfort. However, this did not deter Miami, as Jamal Cain contributed 18 points and six rebounds, while Bam Adebayo and Jaime Jaquez Jr. added 17 points each.

Herro praised the team’s resilience and ‘next-man-up’ mentality, which was crucial in compensating for the absence of their starters. This approach was evident in their strong performance against a Warriors team that had been enjoying a successful run at the Chase Center.

The Warriors, coming off eight straight home wins, faced a challenging game against the determined Heat. Trayce Jackson-Davis of Golden State, who had 10 points and 11 rebounds, acknowledged the Heat’s intensity and hard play.

Golden State’s Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson were limited to 13 points each, with Curry notably held scoreless until late in the second quarter due to Miami’s tight defense. The Warriors struggled with their shooting, hitting just 42% from the field and a mere 24.2% from beyond the arc.

Despite leading the NBA in rebounds per game, the Warriors were narrowly outrebounded by the Heat, who held a 44-43 edge. This aspect of physicality and effort is something Heat coach Erik Spoelstra hopes to maintain throughout their road trip, emphasizing the importance of setting a strong tone from the outset.

Looking Ahead

The Miami Heat look to continue their winning streak as they face the Utah Jazz on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Golden State Warriors will aim to bounce back when they host the Dallas Mavericks on the same day, seeking to improve their standing after dropping back under .500 overall.

Wembanyama’s Stellar Performance Leads Spurs to 118-105 Victory Over Trail Blazers

PORTLAND, Ore. – Victor Wembanyama’s impressive stat line of 30 points, six rebounds, six assists, and seven blocks spearheaded the San Antonio Spurs’ 118-105 win over the Portland Trail Blazers on Thursday night. This victory marked the end of the Spurs’ five-game losing streak and showcased Wembanyama’s growing influence in the league.

Wembanyama, the No. 1 pick in the NBA draft, has been a revelation this season, with this game marking his third 30-point performance. His previous high-scoring games included 30 points against the Los Angeles Lakers on December 13 and 38 points in a win over the Phoenix Suns on November 2. His matchup against fellow high-profile rookie Scoot Henderson added an extra layer of excitement to the game.

Henderson, who finished with 25 points, four assists, and six turnovers for Portland, expressed his admiration for Wembanyama’s unique abilities, particularly his extraordinary length, which presents a significant challenge for opponents.

For San Antonio, Jeremy Sochan contributed significantly with 16 points and seven rebounds. Their strong start was pivotal, as the Spurs established a commanding 28-point lead in the first quarter, ending it with a 38-14 advantage. Wembanyama highlighted the team’s cohesive play, noting their constant ball movement, sharing, and tight defense, which resulted in numerous deflections, particularly in the first half.

The Spurs’ shooting efficiency was a key factor in their dominant first quarter, shooting 67% (14 for 21), while Portland struggled, making only 22% (5 for 23) of their shots.

Portland’s Malcolm Brogdon and Jerami Grant each scored 29 points, but their efforts were not enough to overcome the Spurs’ early lead and Wembanyama’s all-around dominance.

Rematch on the Horizon

The teams are set for a quick turnaround, with another matchup scheduled in Portland on Friday night. The Trail Blazers will be looking to adjust their strategy, particularly in handling Wembanyama’s impact, while the Spurs will aim to replicate their successful performance and build momentum from this win.
