Jokic’s Flawless Performance Powers Nuggets to Dominant 142-105 Win Over Grizzlies

DENVER – In an extraordinary display of efficiency and skill, Nikola Jokic led the Denver Nuggets to their highest-scoring game of the season, defeating the Memphis Grizzlies 142-105 on Thursday night. Jokic’s perfect shooting night included 26 points, 14 rebounds, and 10 assists, marking his 116th regular-season triple-double, placing him fourth in NBA history.

Jokic’s impeccable performance saw him shooting 11 for 11 from the field, successfully making his only 3-point attempt, and going 3 for 3 from the free-throw line. This stellar outing followed another near-perfect game against Golden State, where he converted all 18 free throws.

The Nuggets benefited from Jokic’s brilliance, particularly in the third quarter, where he completed his 11th triple-double of the season before heading to the bench. Teammate Peyton Watson, who scored a season-high 20 points in place of the injured Aaron Gordon, expressed awe at Jokic’s ability to consistently deliver triple-doubles.

Memphis faced a significant challenge, playing without star player Ja Morant, who was sidelined due to illness. Morant’s absence was keenly felt, as the Grizzlies had won all four games since his season debut on December 19. Denver coach Michael Malone acknowledged the advantage of facing a Morant-less Memphis, but also praised his team’s ability to handle the situation effectively.

For the Grizzlies, Desmond Bane led the scoring with 23 points, while Marcus Smart contributed 17. However, Memphis struggled without Morant, dropping to a 6-20 record in games he has missed.

Denver’s Jamal Murray continued his strong form, scoring 23 points and providing nine assists. Murray’s 10 points in the third quarter helped the Nuggets extend their lead significantly, at one point reaching a 32-point advantage.

The game saw a shift early on, with Memphis initially leading by eight. However, Denver orchestrated a commanding 16-0 run between the first and second quarters, establishing a 15-point lead. Despite Memphis closing the gap to four points midway through the second period, the Nuggets responded with an 18-2 run, taking a commanding 65-48 lead at halftime.

Denver’s superiority was evident in their 41-35 outscoring of Memphis in the third quarter and a lead that expanded to as much as 38 points in the fourth.

Upcoming Games

The Grizzlies will look to rebound as they face the Los Angeles Clippers on Friday night. Meanwhile, the Nuggets, riding high on a six-game winning streak, will host the Oklahoma City Thunder on the same night, aiming to continue their impressive run.

Captain Fazel Atrachali Confident About Adani Sportsline Owned Gujarat Giants’ Chances Against Bengal Warriors

Noida, 29th December, 2023: Captained by the talismanic Fazel Atrachali, the Adani Sportsline owned Gujarat Giants have made a solid start to the final week of the year 2023 with a couple of fantastic wins in Season 10 of the Pro Kabaddi League. Wins against the UP Yoddhas and the Tamil Thalaivas have put them in a strong place, ahead of their game against the Bengal Warriors, on New Years’ Eve.

Reflecting on the wins, coach Ram Mehar Singh said, “While the opposition put a lot of focus on the likes of Fazel, one of the big turning points in our game against the Tamil Thalaivas was when Parteek got going. We played a dominant game for the majority of the match, and despite our mistakes, we could see that we were in the driver’s seat.”

“Parteek played a big role in the attack and in the defensive side of things, and I am happy about that. Even Rakesh did very well. The opponents targeting Fazel had helped us, as the likes of Sombir also were able to step up with their performances in the captain’s absence when he had to sit out.”

Speaking about the influence of his skipper, Ram Mehar explained, that having someone like Fazel in his corner is very helpful. “The captain is always motivating the players, whether it is in the match or during training sessions, the skipper is continuously giving the players a pat on the back. Even if the coach has been a little tough on them for a mistake. Fazel is an example for all the captains, even the new ones in the game. I am delighted to have a captain like him. My captain often takes on a coaching type of role when he is on the mat because of the experience he has.”

The Gujarat Giants were the most dynamic team when the competition began in Ahmedabad, and they are keen to end the year on a high, and the captain is happy that everyone in the team is stepping up as and when required.

“We have been playing as a team and the Tamil Thalaivas were concentrating a lot on me, but in that time it was good to see the other members come in and score the points,” the captain said.

Looking ahead, the coach said, that the Adani Sportsline owned Gujarat Giants will first look to go a winning streak for at least a few more games before they can breathe a bit easier. And captain Fazel said, “Maninder is a good player, but I think I can tackle him. From our next training session our focus will be on the Bengal Warriors but I think now we are playing better as a unit, so things are more in control in the defensive side of things. And with the Bengal Warriors team, one needs to keep Maninder quiet, if he does well then, they do well. Unlike us, if Parteek doesn’t do well, then Rohit will or Rakesh will and I think we are in a good place.”

“DP World ILT20 was my first taste of cricket with world-class players,” says UAE left-arm pacer Muhammad Jawadullah

Dubai, 29th December 2023: From time to time, we come across stories of seemingly unheard talents popping up and rising up the ranks to catch everyone’s attention. Muhammad Jawadullah, who was a regular in tennis ball cricket, was an unknown entity in the professional cricket circuit until he took part in a nation-wide talent hunt for bowlers in April 2022 organized under the watchful eyes of Robin Singh, the coach of the UAE national cricket team at that point in time.

Rest is history, as he went on to debut for the UAE national team in both ODI’s and T20I’s in 2023 and he credits his exposure in the DP World International League T20 for propelling his career. “I went into the first edition of the DP World ILT20 without any experience. Once I got to play more and more games, it not only helped me build my confidence but the exposure even helped me in getting my first international cap for UAE in both ODI and T20I for the UAE. The learning process hasn’t stopped. I’m looking to get better with every passing day,” he said.

The 24-year-old left arm quick spoke about his first time on such a big stage with a great deal of delight. “The DP World ILT20 is a very big tournament and I was indeed fortunate to have been included in the Sharjah Warriors squad for the first edition. This was my first taste of cricket with world-class players. The feeling was surreal and will stay with me for life,” he said.

For the Season 2 of Gulf region’s biggest T20 League scheduled to begin on 19 January, Muhammad Jawadullah has been retained by the Sharjah Warriors. He was part of the same franchise in the inaugural edition of the tournament where they finished fifth and will look to help the team better their performance in the forthcoming edition.

Muhammad Jawadullah maintains that the DP World International League T20 is a massive platform to take off from. He said, “This is one of the best leagues going around and it is a ginormous opportunity for all the UAE players to leave a mark. A good tournament here can propel one’s career to the next level.”

Emphasizing his goals for the upcoming edition, Jawadullah said, “I obviously would love it if we can go on to win the tournament. At the same time, I would like to learn whatever I can from the senior players as well as all the international players coming in to play the league that can help me improve my game,” he said. “I’d also like to learn about the execution of out swing deliveries, slower balls and yorkers from the widely experienced cricketers whom I’ll be playing with,” he concluded.

The Sharjah Warriors boasts of world class players like Chris Woakes, Maheesh Theekshana, Daniel Sams and Johnson Charles while the Season 2 of DP World ILT20 will feature Australia’s World Cup hero David Warner, Andre Russell, David Willey, Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Shaheen Shah Afridi, Alex Hales, Shimron Hetmyer, Chris Jordan, Trent Boult, Nicholas Pooran among others. More than 100 international and 24 UAE players will feature in the tournament.

The DP World ILT20 will be a memorable occasion for all, the tournament final will be staged at the iconic ‘Ring of Fire’ Dubai International Stadium on Saturday, 17 February.

The 10th season of the Indian Super League is a moment of great pride for Indian football: Abhishek Bachchan

Mumbai, 29th December, 2023: Chennaiyin FC co-owner Abhishek Bachchan exclaimed that the Indian Super League (ISL) entering its 10th season is a matter of great pride for all stakeholders of the sport in the country. Speaking on the sidelines of the match between Mumbai City FC and Chennaiyin FC at the Mumbai Football Arena (MFA) last night, Bachchan earmarked this as a momentous feat for Indian football and expressed his gratitude to the fans for their support both to the Marina Machans as well as the ISL.

Abhishek, who has been associated with the league since its first season, said, “It’s an amazing feat for such a young league to be celebrating its 10th season. We are very proud of all the stakeholders, owners, team, and the players. It’s a momentous occasion for everybody associated with Indian football. It’s wonderful and a moment of great pride.”

“Thank you for your support, thank you for supporting Indian football and Chennaiyin FC, and I hope that we can hope to entertain you all and play quality, good football for you all for many, many years to come,” he put across a warm message for all the fans of the league.

Chennaiyin FC made an impactful move in the summer prior to this season by appointing Scottish tactician Owen Coyle as the head coach of the club. This year, with a relatively young squad at his disposal, he has managed to take Chennaiyin FC into the top-six heading into the season break. Despite the 3-0 loss to the Islanders on Thursday, the Marina Machans are well in contention to qualify for the playoffs and take it one game at a time from there. Bachchan hailed Coyle as ‘family’, expressing confidence in his methods and track record.

“Owen is family, and we have always said that once you are a part of the family, you always remain a part of the family. Having him back is just a wonderful boost of self-confidence. He knows the club inside out. He is very dear and close to both Vita (Dani) and me. He knows the DNA of the club. We enjoy the style of coaching and the style of play that he infuses into the boys, and you can see a huge change in the squad already. It’s just half the season gone and he has made such a huge impact,” Bachchan said.

The club co-owner also encouraged his players to give it their all in the matches. Irrespective of the results, he wishes to see them put their 100% on the field in every single match. He acknowledged that the larger dream is to see them win matches and laurels, but hard work and determination are areas that they should not compromise on. He backed the boys to come back stronger in the second half of the campaign, with a belief that Coyle could have a stronger impact in the squad moving forward.

“The expectation is what is there every season. It’s to go out there and give it your best. We will try our best. As long as they put in the effort, I am very happy with them. I am glad to see that they have been putting in a lot of effort. But, it’s still early days. There’s still a lot more that Owen can impact onto the squad. I am very eager to see the end results. But, obviously the aim, wish, and the dream is always to give it your best,” Bachchan signed off.

Post the match between FC Goa and NorthEast United FC in Guwahati today, the Indian Super League 2023-24 season takes a break for international matches, with India set to participate in the AFC Asian Cup campaign starting from January 12 onwards in Qatar.

Rupinder Pal Singh conducts drag flicking camp for Indian Team ahead of FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024

Bengaluru, 29th December 2023: Renowned drag flicker Rupinder Pal Singh is currently at SAI Bengaluru to conduct a 5-day drag flicking camp for the Indian Women’s Hockey Team. The camp, which commenced on 27th December, will see Rupinder Pal assisting the Indian Women’s Hockey Team’s drag flickers, including Deepika and Gurjit Kaur, as the team prepares for the crucial FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024.

The FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 is scheduled to take place in Ranchi from the 13th to the 19th January. India are placed in Pool B along with New Zealand, Italy, and the United States. Meanwhile, Pool A consists of Germany, Japan, Chile, and the Czech Republic.

Speaking about their ongoing session, seasoned Indian pro Gurjit Kaur said, “The 5-day drag flicking camp at SAI Bengaluru has proven to be a valuable experience for us. We are learning new things each day and looking to further improve our game by focusing on specific aspects that need refinement. Rupinder has been instrumental in guiding us, and the overall experience has been one of focused intensity. As we gear up for the upcoming tournaments, we are confident that the lessons learned here will contribute significantly to our performance on the field.”

Echoing Gurjit’s sentiments, young Indian Women’s Hockey Team forward Deepika said that Rupinder’s experience as a drag-flicker has been invaluable to them. “He shared his insights on the first rushers in today’s game, how they have become fearless and close down on the ball faster than before. To counter this, he advised us to pick up the ball faster. We also picked his brain on how to beat the first rusher, determining the line the rusher follows, where to get the ball stopped, which angle to take the shot in, and how to deal with mis-trapped balls. This camp will help us strengthen our penalty corners and give us a better chance to score in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024,” Deepika commented.

Rupinder Pal Singh had scored a whopping 234 goals in 223 appearances for the Indian Men’s Hockey Team before his retirement in 2021. The towering fullback was also an integral part of the team that claimed the Bronze medal in the Tokyo 2020 Olympics.

“Gurjit and Deepika are exceptional players and drag flickers. They quickly understand and implement my pointers. This crash course will be a fantastic way to brush up on their skills before heading to Ranchi to participate in the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024. The whole team seems to be giving their all to ensure they qualify for the Paris 2024 Olympics, and I am certain that they will do well in Ranchi,” the ace drag-flicker elaborated on the ongoing camp.

PKL 10: ‘I am trying to speak to the players in Hindi,’ says U Mumba’s Iranian Head Coach Gholamreza Mazandarani

NOIDA, 29th December 2023: While a lot of players from Iran have achieved recognition in the Pro Kabaddi League, the Iranian Gholamreza Mazandarani has also made a mark as a Coach in the league. After returning as Head Coach for U Mumba in Season 10, Mazandarani has helped the team win four out of six games and the side is currently placed in the sixth position with 21 points.

Speaking about his experience of taking up the Head Coach’s role at U Mumba for the first time in Season 6, the Iranian said, “It was difficult for me to coach the U Mumba side in the sixth season because I didn’t have a lot of experience of coaching outside Iran and my English wasn’t great. But we had a good combination and the team played well. I understood that I needed to improve my English and knowledge about the game.”

When asked how he gets through to players, who don’t understand English in the current U Mumba side, he said, “I have been able to get through to some of the players, but some players find it difficult to understand because they don’t know English properly. However, I have been trying to learn some Hindi words as well. Right now, I know words like neeche and uppar. But I am trying to improve and speak to the players in Hindi.”

Furthermore, Mazandarani spoke about PKL’s impact on Iran’s kabaddi, “The Pro Kabaddi League has definitely helped in growing the game in Iran. The players in Iran aim to play in PKL because all the stars are here and the league helps the players to earn money.”

Mazandarani also expressed that other countries should aim to have their own kabaddi leagues as well, “It was a really good idea to start the Pro Kabaddi League. But I feel other countries should have their own leagues as well. Some countries play only in Asian Games or Asian Championships, so they don’t have a lot of tournaments. But if all countries have kabaddi leagues and the teams from all these leagues also compete in a World kabaddi league, then all nations will improve in kabaddi.”

Gholamreza Mazandarani will be seen marshalling his troops next when U Mumba take on Telugu Titans in their first game of the Noida leg on Saturday.

Team Environment Key For Success Says Sanchit Sharma as Adani Sportsline owned Gulf Giants Gears Up to Defend ILT20 Crown

Young UAE pacer Sanchit Sharma was a key player for the Adani Sportsline-owned Gulf Giants, who went on to win the inaugural edition of the International League T20 in 2022, under the coaching of Zimbabwean legend Andy Flower. He took seven wickets in nine matches and was integral to the side during the run in to the trophy.

The Adani Sportsline-owned Giants were brilliant in the inaugural season of the ILT20 and secured the trophy with a tough fight. Sharing his thoughts on what took them the distance, Sanchit said, “When I got selected for the Gulf Giants, all my fellow UAE teammates, all the players that got selected from UAE, and everyone agreed that for us to even qualify for the eliminators, let alone winning the tournament, looked tough.

“But, in terms of the environment, we have the best environment. Players understood each other very well, and their capabilities, which led us to the title,” he added.

However, this victory and the career that Sanchit has had till now was almost not meant to be. He met with an accident just before Diwali in 2021, but his resilience, and the help of the doctors, revived his fledgling career. “I can still remember it was two years ago on the eve of Diwali. I had instructions from home ‘Please don’t go on a festival day’, mom was insisting. I told her, ‘I’ll just go for a couple of hours, I’ll train and come back’. Just as I was about to reach the training centre when the accident happened. I was hurt pretty badly.”

“I just got into the UAE men’s side, and I thought everything would go away. And that’s when I thought, ‘You got to be stronger mentally.’ It took me four or five months to get off my bed. God gave me a second chance, I always tell this to myself,” he recalled.

Now having been retained by the Adani Sportsline-owned Gulf Giants, Sanchit revealed the reason behind his team’s form and what makes them tick. “The management is brilliant with us. Maybe that’s what has led to the environment to be nice. Coming in, I’ve always seen all these players on TV and always wanted to play against them. I had this feeling that I wouldn’t get any better with them because they’re big stars. But then the way they welcomed all the UAE players, that is what I meant by the environment is very good.”

“We have the best environment, which is very important for any team,” added Sanchit. “That is what will help us hopefully win the title again. And being a T20 bowler, the pitches are a lot flatter comparatively. We just need to level up our games. We just have to get on with our game and try to make the most of whatever opportunities we get,” concluded the young pace icon.

Year-in-review: Indian Women’s Hockey Team grows from strength to strength in 2023

Bengaluru, 29th December 2023: The Indian Women’s Hockey Team has had a great run in the year 2023. They missed out on direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games but bounced back to clinch the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023. Furthermore, they have achieved their best-ever FIH World Rankings, which is a testament to their hard work and dedication.

With their focus solely pinned on winning the Gold medal at the Hangzhou 2022 Asian Games, the Indian Team started the year with practice matches against South Africa and the Netherlands in January followed by a three-match tour to Australia in May 2023. They then participated in the 4 Nations Invitational Tournament in Terrassa where they remained unbeaten against the hosts Spain and England.

Following an action-packed first half of 2023, the Indian Women’s Hockey Team clinched the Hockey5s Asia Cup held in Salalah in August 2023. They entered the Asian Games with a strong momentum. They were unbeaten in the pool stage of the tournament, but went down 0-4 against China in the Semi-Final, thus missing out on the Gold medal match and eventually ruling out of contention for direct qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympic Games. However, they returned home with a Bronze medal from China.

Looking back at an eventful year, India’s ace goalkeeper and Captain Savita, expressed, “It has been a wonderful year, we had our ups and downs but we have grown from strength to strength as a team. There is one regret of missing out on the direct qualification for the Paris 2024, but it’s part and parcel of sports. We have left that disappointment behind and have been focusing on our learnings.”

India then went on to clinch the Jharkhand Women’s Asian Champions Trophy Ranchi 2023 with a dominant 4-0 win over Japan in the Final and achieved their best-ever FIH World Rankings (No. 6 with 2368.83 points) in November.

“We are ending the year on a high; we had a great outing in Ranchi at the Asian Champions Trophy. We were unbeaten in the tournament and there have been a lot of learnings as well throughout the year. We have climbed to No. 6 in world rankings, which is our highest-ever, so this is something that will give us a major boost as we enter the New Year,” Savita stated.

It will be a busy start to 2024 as India will take part in the all-important FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 and the FIH Hockey5s World Cup Oman 2024 scheduled to be held in January. They will also make a comeback in the FIH Pro League 2023/24 season from February in Odisha.

“It will certainly be a busy start to the new year. We are focused on the FIH Hockey Olympic Qualifiers Ranchi 2024 at the moment and are working very hard at the National Camp. We will be playing at the same venue where we won the Asian Champions trophy recently, so we have good memories of Ranchi. We are looking forward to an exciting 2024,” Savita concluded.

Flacco Shines as Browns Clinch Playoff Berth with Commanding Victory Over Jets

CLEVELAND — In a thrilling Thursday night showdown, the Cleveland Browns, led by veteran quarterback Joe Flacco, secured an unlikely playoff spot with a decisive 37-20 victory over the New York Jets. This win marks only the second playoff berth for the Browns since 2002, a remarkable turnaround given their challenging season riddled with injuries.

The Browns’ record now stands at 11-5, assuring them a wild-card position. They remain in contention for the AFC North title and possibly the No. 1 seed in the conference, an achievement that appeared almost impossible weeks ago as the team grappled with significant injuries.

Flacco, the 38-year-old Super Bowl 47 MVP, has been a game-changer for Cleveland since joining the team. His record as a starter is now an impressive 4-1, a testament to his impact since being recruited from New Jersey last month to salvage the Browns’ season. Flacco threw two touchdown passes to Jerome Ford in the first half, helping the Browns establish a commanding 20-point lead over the Jets, who stand at 6-10 following this defeat.

Notably, Flacco amassed 296 passing yards in the first half alone and became the first quarterback in 34 games to surpass 300 yards against the Jets’ defense. He also set a record for Cleveland, passing over 300 yards in four consecutive games.

The Jets, hindered by the absence of Zach Wilson due to a concussion, started Trevor Siemian for the second consecutive week. Siemian had his moments but was overshadowed by Flacco’s dominant performance. A crucial mistake by Siemian led to a 30-yard touchdown return by Browns’ safety Ronnie Hickman, pushing the score to 20-7.

The Browns have navigated a season fraught with challenges, including injuries that have sidelined key players like quarterback Deshaun Watson and running back Nick Chubb. Flacco, their fourth starting quarterback this season, has been instrumental in keeping the team’s playoff hopes alive despite these setbacks.

Injuries continued to play a role in this game. The Browns were without their starting kicker, punter, and wide receiver Amari Cooper, who had set a franchise record with a 265-yard performance last Sunday. In their place, newcomers Riley Patterson and Matt Haack filled the roles of kicker and punter, respectively.

On the defensive front, Browns’ star Myles Garrett broke a five-game sack drought, while the Jets’ Garrett Wilson surpassed 1,000 receiving yards for the second consecutive season.

The game was not without its alarming moments, particularly when Browns’ wide receiver Elijah Moore suffered a head injury in the second quarter. The injury led to Moore being assisted off the field and taken to the locker room for further evaluation.

Additional injuries were reported for both teams, affecting key players like Jets’ WR Allen Lazard and OL Jacob Hanson, and Browns’ CB Mike Ford Jr.

Looking ahead, the Jets face a challenging game against New England on January 7th, while the Browns take on Cincinnati on the same day, in what promises to be a crucial match for their playoff aspirations.

Haliburton’s Historic Night Leads Pacers Past Bulls 120-104

CHICAGO – In an exceptional display of playmaking, Tyrese Haliburton set a career-high with 20 assists without a single turnover, adding 21 points to guide the Indiana Pacers to a 120-104 victory over the Chicago Bulls on Thursday night. Haliburton’s performance etched his name in NBA history, becoming only the fifth player to record 20 or more assists without a turnover.

Despite concerns about his participation due to a sore lower back, Haliburton’s on-court brilliance was a testament to his resilience and skill. “You don’t get 20 assists without guys making a lot of shots,” Haliburton reflected, highlighting his teammates’ contributions to his record-setting night. His zero turnovers marked a significant turnaround, given his recent struggles with ball security.

Myles Turner led the Pacers’ scoring with 24 points, while Buddy Hield added 19 points. Indiana’s proficient shooting, especially from the 3-point line (19 of 42), played a crucial role in their victory. This win marked their second consecutive triumph, showcasing their offensive firepower.

The game witnessed a dramatic shift when the Bulls, after trailing by as much as 25 points, mounted a robust comeback. They briefly took the lead at 93-90 with eight minutes remaining. However, Haliburton, assuming the role of a closer, responded with crucial late three-pointers to suppress Chicago’s rally.

Haliburton’s pivotal assists included a key pass to Hield for a three-pointer that had earlier pushed Indiana’s lead to 19 points in the third quarter. His celebratory gesture towards the Chicago bench after this play underscored the Pacers’ dominance at that moment. However, the Bulls didn’t relent, narrowing the gap to 85-77 entering the fourth quarter with a 14-1 run.

For the Bulls, Patrick Williams led the scoring with 22 points, while DeMar DeRozan contributed 21 points. The team, grappling with injuries, particularly missed All-Star guard Zach Lavine, absent for the last 14 games due to a foot issue. Coby White, stepping up in Lavine’s absence, had a challenging night, scoring 16 points on 5-for-19 shooting.

Turner emphasized the importance of defense in the Pacers’ victory, noting it as one of their best defensive games of the season. The Pacers’ collective effort limited the Bulls to 104 points, a season-low for the Chicago team.

Looking Ahead

The Pacers, carrying the momentum from this impressive win, will host the New York Knicks on Saturday night. Meanwhile, the Bulls, looking to recover from this setback, will face the Philadelphia 76ers at home on the same night.

Edwards’ 44-Point Extravaganza Leads Timberwolves to Victory Over Mavericks, 118-110

MINNEAPOLIS – Anthony Edwards’ scintillating 44-point performance powered the Minnesota Timberwolves to a 118-110 triumph over the Dallas Mavericks on Thursday night. Rudy Gobert’s double-double with 20 points and 11 rebounds further solidified Minnesota’s dominance at home, improving their impressive home record to 13-1 this season.

Dallas faced a significant setback, missing star player Luka Doncic, sidelined due to left quadriceps soreness. This absence was acutely felt, especially considering the Mavericks’ recent 113-110 loss to Cleveland. Additionally, Kyrie Irving’s continued absence with a right heel contusion further depleted Dallas’ offensive arsenal.

The Timberwolves, seizing this opportunity, initially established a comfortable 18-point lead in the first quarter. Edwards, in an aggressive offensive display, accounted for 14 of those points, exploiting the gaps in Dallas’ defense. Karl-Anthony Towns contributed 10 points, playing a crucial role in the team’s overall performance.

Despite their early dominance, Minnesota’s vulnerability surfaced through 22 turnovers, which Dallas capitalized on to score 29 points. This allowed the Mavericks to stay within striking distance, fueled by Tim Hardaway Jr.’s remarkable 32 points off the bench and Jaden Hardy’s 17-point contribution.

The game’s pivotal moment came midway through the third quarter, with the Timberwolves trailing by a point. Sparked by Edwards, Minnesota embarked on a decisive 15-3 run, regaining control and maintaining the lead for the remainder of the match.

Hardaway, undeterred by the Timberwolves’ surge, continued his impressive scoring spree, notching 18 points in the second half. His precision from the field (11 of 19) and beyond the arc (5 of 11) kept Dallas in contention.

However, Minnesota’s resilience shone through in the fourth quarter. As Dallas narrowed the gap to four points, Kyle Anderson stepped up, hitting consecutive three-pointers to ensure the Timberwolves stayed ahead.

Upcoming Fixtures

The Mavericks, looking to rebound from this setback, face a challenging encounter against the Golden State Warriors on Saturday. Meanwhile, the Timberwolves, buoyed by this victory, prepare to host the Los Angeles Lakers on the same day, aiming to continue their formidable form at home.

Ingram Ignites Late Surge as Pelicans Edge Jazz 112-105

NEW ORLEANS – In a thrilling encounter at the Smoothie King Center, the New Orleans Pelicans snapped their two-game losing streak with a hard-fought 112-105 victory over the Utah Jazz on Thursday night. Brandon Ingram’s late-game heroics and a collective team effort propelled the Pelicans to a much-needed win.

Ingram, who finished with 26 points, played a pivotal role in turning the game’s tide in the final minutes. His crucial 3-pointer with just over two minutes left on the clock sparked an 8-2 run, pushing New Orleans ahead 102-98. This moment shifted the momentum firmly in the Pelicans’ favor.

The Pelicans’ resolve was further exemplified by Dyson Daniels’ hustle play, diving to the floor for a loose ball and executing a skillful bounce pass between a defender’s legs. This set up Trey Murphy III for a critical three-pointer, his first successful attempt after six misses, extending the lead to 107-100. Larry Nance Jr., returning after a 14-game absence due to injury, then connected on a dynamic dunk from a Zion Williamson assist, emphasizing New Orleans’ dominance in the paint.

Utah, refusing to go down without a fight, narrowed the gap to 109-105 on Lauri Markkanen’s free throws with just 38 seconds remaining. However, Murphy sealed the deal for the Pelicans with another three-pointer, ensuring victory with only 18 seconds left.

Zion Williamson’s performance was another highlight for New Orleans, contributing 21 points and 10 rebounds for his second consecutive double-double and fifth of the season. The Pelicans’ inside strength was evident as they outscored the Jazz 62-42 in the paint. CJ McCollum also played a crucial role, adding 22 points to the winning effort.

For the Jazz, Collin Sexton led the scoring with 26 points, while Markkanen added a double-double with 24 points and 10 rebounds. Walker Kessler’s perfect shooting night, going 5-for-5, was a bright spot, contributing 11 points to Utah’s cause.

The first half was marked by McCollum’s sharpshooting, scoring 14 points with four 3-pointers. Nance, making a significant impact on his return, contributed nine points and seven rebounds in 25 minutes of play.

Looking Forward

The Jazz, after concluding their five-game road trip in New Orleans, will look to bounce back as they host the Miami Heat on Saturday night. The Pelicans, riding the wave of this morale-boosting victory, prepare to host the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday night, aiming to build on their momentum.

Boston Celtics Overcome Detroit Pistons in Overtime Thriller, 128-122

In a gripping showdown at TD Garden, the Boston Celtics narrowly escaped with a 128-122 overtime victory over the Detroit Pistons on Thursday night, extending Detroit’s historic losing streak to 28 games.

The Pistons, desperate to avoid equaling the NBA’s longest losing streak held by the “Trust the Process” Philadelphia 76ers, showcased a surprising burst of energy in the first half. Detroit established a commanding 21-point lead, displaying a level of play uncharacteristic of their recent performances. Yet, the Celtics, exhibiting their top-tier status, methodically chipped away at this deficit.

As the game entered its crucial stages, the Pistons, trailing 106-100 in the final two minutes of regulation, found an unlikely hero in Jaden Ivey. Ivey’s scoring spree, culminating in six consecutive points, revitalized Detroit’s hopes. Bojan Bogdanovic then delivered under pressure, sinking a crucial putback with just 4.6 seconds remaining, pushing the game into overtime.

Overtime, however, belonged to Boston. Derrick White, in a stunning display of clutch performance, racked up 10 of his 23 points in the extra period. Kristaps Porzingis, who ended the night with an impressive 35 points, dominated both ends of the court. His pivotal contributions included a spectacular dunk off a full-court assist from Jayson Tatum and crucial free throws that stretched Boston’s lead to 125-117.

The Celtics’ victory was further bolstered by Tatum’s standout performance, featuring 31 points and 10 assists. His leadership and playmaking were instrumental in Boston securing its fourth consecutive win and ninth in the last 10 games.

Despite the loss, Detroit’s Cade Cunningham was a beacon of hope, delivering 31 points and nine assists. Ivey’s double-double (22 points, 10 rebounds) and Jalen Duren’s 15 points and 14 rebounds were also highlights for the Pistons, who are showing signs of emerging from their slump.

This game marked another chapter in Detroit’s challenging season, as they had previously set the record for the most consecutive losses in a season with 27, following a defeat to Brooklyn.

Looking Ahead

The Pistons now face a crucial home game against Toronto on Saturday night, a matchup that presents an opportunity to halt their record-tying losing streak. Meanwhile, the Celtics continue their campaign, hosting Toronto on Friday night, looking to maintain their momentum in the league.

This enthralling contest between the Celtics and Pistons not only showcased the resilience and potential of a struggling Detroit team but also highlighted the unwavering competitiveness of Boston, a team firmly establishing itself as a powerhouse in the NBA.

The Carolina Hurricanes showcased their resilience and scoring prowess in a thrilling 5-3 victory over the Montreal Canadiens at PNC Arena in Raleigh, North Carolina, on Thursday. The win, coming on the heels of a 5-2 success against the Nashville Predators, elevates the Hurricanes’ recent record to 3-1-1 in their past five outings.

Andrei Svechnikov was the star of the night, scoring a hat trick, including a decisive one-timer in the third period to put the Hurricanes ahead and an empty-netter to seal the deal. Jesper Fast contributed significantly with two goals, and Brent Burns’ three assists further fueled the team’s attack.

For the Canadiens, Cayden Primeau stood in goal, making 29 saves. Despite his efforts, Montreal’s five-game point streak came to an end. The Canadiens showed glimpses of a comeback, with goals from Mitchell Stephens, Mike Matheson, and Josh Anderson, but they ultimately fell short.

The game began with Svechnikov setting the tone early in the first period, followed by Fast’s first goal. Montreal’s Stephens and Matheson responded, but Fast’s second goal in the second period kept the Hurricanes ahead. The third period saw Anderson’s equalizer for the Canadiens, but Svechnikov’s prowess shone through with two more goals, including the game-winner.

The match was also notable for Sean Monahan achieving his 500th NHL point, a testament to his career longevity and skill.

In summary, the Hurricanes demonstrated their offensive depth and resilience, with key contributions from Svechnikov, Aho, Fast, and Burns. The Canadiens, despite their spirited effort, were unable to match Carolina’s intensity in the crucial moments of the game.

West Ham United Stuns Arsenal at Emirates Stadium with a 2-0 Victory

Hammers Thwart Gunners’ Top Spot Ambitions in Impressive Display

In a surprising turn of events, West Ham United delivered a significant blow to Arsenal’s Premier League aspirations, clinching a 2-0 victory at the Emirates Stadium. This result not only marked Arsenal’s first home defeat of the season but also prevented them from reclaiming the top spot in the league.

Early Lead and Defensive Resilience: Key to West Ham’s Success

Despite Arsenal’s dominant start, West Ham took the lead in the 13th minute, thanks to Tomas Soucek’s close-range finish. Jarrod Bowen’s assist, confirmed by VAR to be valid, set the tone for the match. The Hammers’ defense, led by Alphonse Areola, then withstood Arsenal’s aggressive attempts to level the score, notably denying Bukayo Saka’s effort that hit the post.

Strategic Adjustments and Exploiting Opportunities

West Ham’s strategy underwent an early shift when Lucas Paqueta, evidently struggling with an injury, was replaced by Said Benrahma. This change did not deter the Hammers, who continued to exploit Arsenal’s vulnerabilities. Declan Rice, facing his former team, nearly extended the lead with a long-range attempt. The crucial moment came when Konstantinos Mavropanos, a former Arsenal defender, doubled West Ham’s lead. His header from a James Ward-Prowse corner demonstrated West Ham’s effective use of set-pieces and further dampened Arsenal’s spirits.

Arsenal’s Missed Chances and West Ham’s Controlled Finish

Arsenal, with Gabriel Jesus failing to capitalize on scoring opportunities, struggled to find their rhythm. In contrast, West Ham displayed composure and control, effectively managing the game’s tempo in the closing stages. Benrahma had a chance to further extend the lead from the penalty spot, but David Raya’s save kept the scoreline at 2-0.

Concluding Remarks: West Ham’s Rise and Arsenal’s Setback

This victory signifies a significant upward trajectory for West Ham, propelling them closer to the top four. For Arsenal, the defeat is a stark reminder of the competitiveness of the Premier League and the need for consistency in pursuit of the title. The match showcased West Ham’s tactical acumen and Arsenal’s vulnerability under pressure, setting an intriguing tone for the remainder of the season.

Otto Stenberg Leads Sweden to Convincing 5-0 Win Over Germany at World Juniors

Sweden secured a commanding 5-0 victory against Germany at the Scandinavium, marking their second win in the IIHF World Junior Championship, thanks to a stellar performance by Otto Stenberg, who scored a hat trick. The loss brought Germany’s record to 1-1 following their historic win over Finland.

Germany faced an uphill battle against a Swedish team they had never defeated in previous encounters. Despite playing impressively and often outperforming Sweden, the German team lacked the decisive scoring and creativity near the net. Coach Tobias Abstreiter’s choice to start Matthias Bittner in goal, instead of Finland game hero Philipp Dietl, paid off as Bittner emerged as one of the best players on the ice.

The game began evenly, but Sweden soon took control. Stenberg’s early breakaway opportunity and Noah Ostlund’s shot off the post were signs of Sweden’s offensive potential. Stenberg broke the deadlock late in the first period with a precise high shot, giving Sweden a 1-0 lead and setting the tone for the game.

Germany dominated the second period with effective forechecking and prolonged offensive plays but failed to convert their chances into goals. Swedish goalie Melker Thelin and Bittner both made crucial saves, yet it was Sweden who extended their lead with a powerful shot from defender Mattias Havelid.

In the third period, Sweden regained their momentum, with Stenberg scoring early on a power play and then completing his hat trick shortly after. Ostlund added the final goal, bringing the score to 5-0.

Stenberg’s performance, highlighted by his hat trick, was a key factor in Sweden’s victory. The game demonstrated Sweden’s ability to capitalize on their opportunities and showcased Germany’s potential, despite the loss. As the tournament progresses, Sweden’s strong start positions them as a serious contender, while Germany looks to rebound in their upcoming matches.

Brighton’s Stunning 4-2 Victory Over Tottenham Hotspur

Seagulls Soar to Victory as Spurs Stumble in Premier League Clash

In a match that defied expectations, Brighton & Hove Albion delivered a remarkable performance to defeat Tottenham Hotspur 4-2. The game, marked by high energy and strategic gameplay, saw Brighton climb the Premier League table, leaving Spurs to rue their missed opportunities.

Early Dominance and Tactical Mastery: The Brighton Approach

Roberto De Zerbi’s Brighton entered the game with tactical changes, recalling James Milner, Facundo Buonanotte, Danny Welbeck, and Jason Steele. Their strategy paid off early, with Brighton taking control and creating significant chances. Welbeck’s early efforts tested Spurs’ Guglielmo Vicario, showcasing Brighton’s attacking intent.Brighton’s breakthrough came from Jack Hinshelwood’s powerful strike, capitalizing on Joao Pedro’s skillful play. Pedro then converted a penalty following a VAR decision, doubling Brighton’s lead and setting the tone for the game.

Spurs’ Struggle for Form and Tactical Missteps

Ange Postecoglou’s Spurs, with changes including Destiny Udogie and Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg, found themselves uncharacteristically on the back foot. They struggled to contain Brighton’s dynamic attack and suffered defensively, conceding two goals in the first half for the first time under Postecoglou’s tenure.

Second Half: Brighton’s Continued Dominance and Spurs’ Late Surge

The second half saw Brighton maintaining their dominance, with Estupinan scoring a spectacular long-range goal. Another successful penalty by Joao Pedro seemed to seal Spurs’ fate. Despite this, Spurs showed resilience, with Alejo Veliz and Ben Davies scoring, hinting at a potential comeback that ultimately fell short.

Concluding Thoughts: Brighton’s Deserved Win and Spurs’ Missed Opportunity

Brighton’s victory, underpinned by strategic brilliance and on-field excellence, was a testament to their capabilities and potential in the Premier League. For Spurs, the defeat was a significant setback, missing a chance to climb higher in the league standings. The game highlighted the unpredictable nature of football and the importance of tactical acumen and team spirit.

Snuggerud’s Hat Trick Powers U.S. to Dominant 11-3 Win Over Switzerland at World Juniors

The United States showcased their formidable strength in the 2024 IIHF World Junior Championship, overpowering Switzerland with a resounding 11-3 victory on Thursday at Frolundaborg. Forward Jimmy Snuggerud led the charge with a first-period natural hat trick, exemplifying the skill and speed cultivated at the USA Hockey National Team Development Program.

Gavin Brindley was another standout, contributing two goals and an assist, while Frank Nazar racked up four assists. This comprehensive victory demonstrates a significant improvement in execution from the U.S. team’s 4-1 opening win over Norway, with the U.S. outshooting Switzerland 40-24. Backup goalie Jacob Fowler secured his first World Junior win in the process.

Switzerland’s starting goalie, Loren Gruter, was substituted out after conceding four goals on 10 shots, with Ewan Huet, son of renowned goalie Cristobal Huet, stepping in as his replacement. Despite Switzerland’s efforts, their defense was overwhelmed by the American attack, which featured 10 NHL first-rounders.

The U.S. team’s aggressive strategy paid off early, with Will Smith scoring just over a minute into the game, followed by Snuggerud’s rapid double. Despite trailing 3-0, Switzerland’s Gregory Weber managed to score a remarkable goal, exhibiting skill and determination, but the U.S. quickly regained their three-goal lead with Snuggerud’s third.

The first period ended 5-1 in favor of the U.S., with Zeev Buium scoring in a somewhat fortuitous manner. The second period saw Brindley take center stage, scoring twice and assisting on Gabe Perreault’s power play goal, with Isaac Howard adding another to extend the lead to 9-1.

In the third period, the teams exchanged goals, with Gael Christe and Thierry Schild scoring for Switzerland. However, Quinn Finley and Eric Pohlkamp responded for the U.S., pushing the final score to 11-3.

This victory maintains the U.S.’s unbeaten record against Switzerland at the World Juniors, with 24 wins and two ties. Looking ahead, both teams face crucial Group B games, with the U.S. playing last year’s silver medalists, the Czech Republic, and Switzerland aiming to avoid relegation in their upcoming match against Norway.

Magnus Carlsen does it again: Fifth World Rapid Chess Championship title for the Norwegian

World #1 Magnus Carlsen has again made history by defending his title in the World Rapid. This is the fifth Rapid title for Carlsen, who also holds five world championship titles in Classical chess and six world titles in Blitz chess. Anastasia Bodnaruk has become the new Women’s World Rapid Champion

With 10 points out of 13 games (with seven wins, six draws and no defeats), Magnus Carlsen emerged on top in a fierce competition of 150 strong players. His outstanding performance earned him not just the championship title but also the first prize of $60,000.

From the tournament’s outset, Carlsen established his position as a frontrunner. By round ten, he emerged as the sole leader, maintaining a half-point advantage over all competitors. He ultimately claimed the title with a draw in the final round, facing off against R Praggnanandhaa, one of India’s highly regarded talents.

“It feels great. I thought the key moment was the first game [today] against Fedoseev… he was the only one who could catch me.

“Sometimes I was playing my games a little bit too safe, but I don’t think I was really in trouble [in this tournament]”.

Asked if he sometimes feels as living the movie Groundhog Day, given the number of times he has won world championships in various categories, Carlsen replied – “I’m happy with that comparison… Hopefully, it will be Groundhog Day next time as well”.

Carlsen named Vladimir Fedoseev, whom he defeated in round ten while playing with the black pieces, as his most formidable opponent in the championship.

Vladimir Fedoseev – who was trailing the Norwegian by half a point and had a chance in the final round to catch up – decided not to risk it and had a quick draw with Dmitry Andreikin. This tactical decision made things easier for Carlsen as it meant he just needed half a point to win the crown

Anastasia Bodnaruk is the new Women’s Rapid Champion

This is the first rapid title for Bodnaruk, who defeated India’s Humpy Koneru by 2.5:1.5 in a tiebreaker match to secure first place and a prize of $40,000.

“It’s hard to say how I’m feeling, but I’m very happy to have won this match,” Bodnaruk said in her immediate reaction.

Bodnaruk started dominating the event on the second day when she emerged as the sole leader. On day three, she continued to maintain her lead, but with three draws in the final three rounds, she allowed two more players to share the top with her.

With 8.5/11 Anastasia Bodnaruk, Lei Tingjie and Humpy Koneru (who was the winner of the 2019 Women’s World Rapid) were sharing 1st to third place.

Thanks to better tiebreaks, Bodnaruk and Koneru went to the playoffs while Lei Tingjie finished third.

In the Blitz tiebreak (with three minutes and a two-second bonification per move), Bodnaruk and Koneru had a fierce battle.

The Indian player emerged victorious in the first game, winning as Black. She then lost the second game in the match after spoiling a much better position. According to regulations, if the two-game match is drawn, a single game shall be played with a time control of three minutes for each player and two seconds increment per move. If that game also ends in a draw, the players will continue to play, switching colours in each game, until one side wins.

The third game ended in a dramatic draw. After a 10-minute break, it was time for the fourth and final game: Koneru had a solid position but ended in time trouble. In a rush, she misplayed her moves and ended up losing – handing over the victory to Anastasia Bodnaruk.

Mumbai City FC enter season break with a clinical 3-0 win against Chennaiyin FC

Mumbai, 28 December 2023: Mumbai City FC struck thrice in the second half to beat Chennaiyin FC by 3-0 at the Mumbai Football Arena (MFA) to enter the season break and the New Year on a positive note in the Indian Super League (ISL) 2023-24.

Lallianzuala Chhangte rediscovered his goal-scoring touch against his former club, in a match in which he missed a kick from the spot before hammering in a goal in the 52nd minute. The Islanders were on the frontfoot in a gruelling affair from the beginning. Their frontline, though missing Greg Stewart, was creating chances aplenty, but was unable to find a breakthrough past this defensively well-arranged Chennaiyin FC unit.

Vikram Partap Singh was a lively presence in the final third, cutting in the centre from the left flank and teasing the visitors with his fierce shots. One of his efforts just curled past Debjit Majumder in the fourth minute, but the Marina Machans got their act together thereafter. They bolstered the backline, preventing Argentine forward Jorge Pereyra Diaz from finding his seventh goal of the season a few yards away from Majumder. Chhangte, with just one goal to his name in 10 ISL matches before this one, had a golden opportunity to get his team the lead from 12 yards away in the 36th minute, after a foul by Bikash Yumnum. His shot hit the crossbar though, infusing belief within the visitors that they could get the first foot ahead in this game.

That was not to be, and Chhangte started the Mumbai City FC comeback in the second half, drilling the ball into the back of the net courtesy of a fine finish from the right side of the box. The Islanders put up a complete show thereafter, constantly hovering around the Chennaiyin FC box with Diaz and Jayesh Rane falling short of bagging the second goal of the night by mere inches.

Diaz virtually missed shooting into an open net in the 58th minute, but Vikram’s penalty in the 80th minute helped the Islanders get a definite lead in the proceedings. Gurkirat Singh earned the spot-kick due to a foul by Chennaiyin FC captain Ryan Edwards, and the forward’s good friend stepped up to convert the opportunity before breaking into a joyous celebration with the supporters. Gurkirat got his due from the game 10 minutes later, earning the reward of donning the role of an ideal No. 9. At the centre of the box, Lalengmawia Ralte set up a slick pass that Gill slotted in with little hesitation to bag his first-ever goal in his ISL career.

Key Performer of the Match

Vikram Partap Singh (Mumbai City FC)

Vikram produced an all-round performance, covering every blade of the grass, playing a vital role in the build-up, making key passes inside the box and finally securing an important strike through the penalty. What’s next for both teams?

Both teams have rounded off their first half of the ISL 2023-24 campaign with this game.

Pistons Plummet to Unprecedented Depths: A Record 27 Consecutive Losses

DETROIT, MI – In a disheartening yet historic turn of events, the Detroit Pistons have etched their name in the annals of the NBA for a reason they’d rather not. The team has set a dubious record, losing their 27th straight game in a single season, a feat previously unseen in the league’s history. This record-setting loss came at the hands of the Brooklyn Nets, who edged out the Pistons with a 118-112 victory on Tuesday night.

The Pistons, who have been struggling to find their footing this season, faced a formidable opponent in the Nets. Key player Cameron Johnson spearheaded the Nets’ charge, scoring an impressive 24 points, contributing significantly to the Pistons’ downfall. This loss further cements the Pistons’ unfortunate position at the bottom of the league standings, marking a streak of defeats that has been unrivaled in NBA history.

What makes this record particularly notable is the sheer magnitude of consecutive losses within a single season, setting a new low for any team in the league. The Philadelphia 76ers held the previous record for the most consecutive losses in a single season, but the Pistons have now surpassed this, adding a melancholic milestone to their franchise history.
