Three Nations Vie for 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup Hosting Rights

Date: December 13, 2023

Three strong bids have been submitted to FIFA for hosting the 2027 Women’s World Cup, a significant development in women’s football. The candidates – a joint bid from Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, and Brazil, and a combined bid from Mexico and the United States – each present unique propositions and strengths.

UEFA Trio: Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands

The European triumvirate of Belgium, Germany, and the Netherlands officially announced their joint bid on October 19, 2020. These nations have a rich footballing history, with Germany having previously hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup in 2011 and the UEFA European Women’s Championship in 2001. Belgium and the Netherlands co-hosted the UEFA European Championship in 2000, and the Netherlands hosted the Women’s Euro in 2017. The proposed cities for this joint bid include Dortmund, Gelsenkirchen, Düsseldorf, Cologne, Amsterdam, Eindhoven, Enschede, Heerenveen, and Rotterdam.

Brazil’s Standalone Bid

Brazil, a country deeply connected to football, has also expressed interest in hosting the 2027 Women’s World Cup. Despite withdrawing from the 2023 edition due to governmental and financial challenges, Brazil has showcased its capability by hosting major events like the 2014 FIFA World Cup and the 2016 Summer Olympics. The Brazilian Football Confederation, along with cities such as Rio de Janeiro and São Paulo, have confirmed their intent to host, with other cities like Salvador, Brasília, Cuiabá, Belém, Manaus, and Fortaleza also showing interest. The opening match is planned at Estádio Nacional Mané Garrincha, with the closing at the iconic Maracanã.

Mexico-United States Joint Proposal

The Mexico-United States joint bid, announced on April 19, 2023, projects a significant revenue of $3 billion. The United States, having hosted the Women’s World Cup in 1999 and 2003, and Mexico, with its experience in hosting the men’s World Cup in 1970 and 1986, bring combined expertise and infrastructure to this bid. This North American collaboration, if successful, would see the U.S. hosting the Women’s World Cup one year after co-hosting the 2026 FIFA World Cup with Canada and Mexico.

FIFA’s Selection Process

The FIFA bidding process, which began on March 23, 2023, involves several key phases. These include submitting expressions of interest, confirmation of bidding intentions, bid workshops, and the submission of final bids. FIFA plans to organize on-site inspections in February 2024 and publish a bid evaluation report in May 2024. The FIFA Congress will appoint the host(s) for the 2027 Women’s World Cup in Bangkok in May 2024.

These bids represent a significant step in the evolution of women’s football, highlighting the growing interest and investment in the sport globally. Each bid brings its unique flavor and promise, setting the stage for an exciting decision-making process by FIFA in the coming months.

PKL 10: Maninder, Nitin & Shrikanth’s massive Super 10s inflict a first for Patna Pirates

BENGALURU, 12th December 2023: Backed by a massive raiding performance, Bengal Warriors inflicted a first loss of the season on the Patna Pirates, beating them 60-42 at the Sree Kanteerava Stadium in Bengaluru on Tuesday, making this the 4th highest match points in PKL’s history with a total of 102 points being scored. Maninder Singh’s 15 points, Nitin Kumar’s 14 and Shrikanth Jadhav’s 12 points extended the Warriors unbeaten run for the season, at the cost of the only other unbeaten team in the league.

A game between two unbeaten teams was always going to centre on who blinked first. As it was, it was the Bengal Warriors, whose talisman Maninder Singh was caught on his first raid of the evening. A tight Pirates defence ensured that they did not leak points while at the other end Sachin kept picking up points sporadically to keep them up on the scorecards.

A SUPER RAID with 5 points (in a single raid) by Nitin Kumar changed the complexion of the game in the final ten minutes of the half, the Warriors going from a three point deficit to leading by one. It sparked a three minute turnaround that saw the Warriors inflict the first ALL OUT of the evening, streaking into a 16-11 lead.

The Patna Pirates started the second half down by 11 points and despite a brief comeback, soon faced a second ALL OUT as the Warriors extended into a 34-22 lead. Maninder and Jadhav had completed their SUPER 10s a quarter of the game yet to go, and the Pirates were basically staving off the inevitable.

The Warriors inflicted a third ALL OUT in the final minutes of the game before wrapping up the points and breaking the Pirates’ unbeaten run with a massive 18 points victory.

Revised schedule unveiled as ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 heads to South Africa

A revised schedule for the ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 has today been revealed by the International Cricket Council (ICC), confirming five venues in South Africa that will host the 15th edition of the celebrated event between 19 January and 11 February, following the decision taken by the ICC Board in November to relocate the event from Sri Lanka.

The most exciting young talent in world cricket will compete for the silverware across 41 matches held at established international venues; Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein, Buffalo Park in East London, Kimberley Oval in Kimberley, JB Marks Oval in Potchefstroom and finally Willowmoore Park in Benoni – the venue selected to host the Semi-Finals on 6 and 8 February, and the Final on 11 February.

The new schedule sees the hosts kick off their campaign against the West Indies in Potchefstroom on opening day, while defending champions India start the defence of their crown a day later against former champions Bangladesh, who claimed the silverware when the tournament was last hosted in South Africa back in 2020.

The event will welcome a new format for this edition, where teams progressing from the group stages will enter a new Super Six stage, starting 30 January, where two groups of six teams will clash to determine the Semi-Finalists and the subsequent Finalists.

In the group listings, holders India are joined by Bangladesh, Ireland and USA in Group A. Group B consists of England, South Africa, West Indies and Scotland. Group C features Australia, Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe and Namibia while Group D is made up of Afghanistan, Pakistan, New Zealand and Nepal.

ICC Head of Events, Chris Tetley commented, “In the past 12 months we have seen South Africa successfully deliver two milestone events for the sport – the inaugural ICC U19 Women’s T20 World Cup last year, and the groundbreaking ICC Women’s T20 World Cup that immediately followed.

“The relocation of the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 to South Africa allows us the opportunity to build on this momentum and welcome the best young cricketers on the planet to five notable international venues.

“This event has a long-standing tradition of unveiling the newest stars onto the international stage, and with fans given the opportunity to witness these players in action for free, we firmly believe the stage is set for another thrilling edition.”

Tournament Director, Wanele Mngomezulu added, “As Cricket South Africa we are humbled by the ICCs show of confidence in our abilities to stage international cricket events. While the task of hosting the U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup 2024 has been conferred upon us with very tight timelines, we are happy to take on the challenge. Hosting this event allows us an opportunity to further sharpen our skills and capabilities in the run up to the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027 which will be held in South Africa.

“Hosting the tournament on home soil is opportune for us to promote cricket to sport loving South Africans and attract new fans and young talent to the game, thereby driving our strategic pillars of excellence, access, and inclusion.”

Ahead of the event, each competing team will play two warm-up matches between 13 and 17 January in venues in Johannesburg and Pretoria.

The U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup has long been the springboard for some of the most recognisable stars of the global game. South Africa will be hoping to claim their second U19 trophy, after previously winning the 2014 event from which future Proteas stars Aiden Markram and Kagiso Rabada made their introduction onto the world stage.

Through the history of the event, India are the most decorated with five U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup titles, Australia have won the event three times, Pakistan twice, while England, Bangladesh, West Indies and 2024 hosts South Africa have each been crowned once.

Cricket: Mirpur pitch rated as “unsatisfactory”

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today announced that the pitch for the second Test of the ICC World Test Championship series between Bangladesh and New Zealand at Shere Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur has been rated as “unsatisfactory” under the ICC Pitch and Outfield Monitoring Process.

ICC Match Referee, David Boon, submitted his report to the ICC expressing the concerns of the match officials and after consulting with the captains of both teams. Following the assessment, the venue has received one demerit point.

The report has been forwarded to the Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB), who now have 14 days if they wish to appeal against the sanction.

Mr Boon said: “The outfield was very good and held up extremely well with the rain. However, it appeared that the pitch may have been under prepared, as it was not hard and was covered in grass clippings on day one. From the first session onwards, throughout the remainder of the match the bounce was inconsistent with numerous balls bursting the surface. Deliveries from spin bowlers often went over the batter’s shoulder when playing forward and then occasionally stayed very low.”

Stop Clock trial to get underway from opening West Indies vs England T20I

In its ongoing efforts to speed up the pace of play in international cricket, the International Cricket Council (ICC) has introduced a stop clock, on a trial basis, in Full Member Men’s ODI and T20I matches (approximately 59 fixtures) between December 2023 and April 2024.

The trial will start with the first T20I match between the West Indies and England on 12 December in Barbados.

The stop clock will restrict the amount of time taken between overs, meaning that the bowling team will need to be ready to bowl the first ball of their next over within 60 seconds of the previous over being completed. Failure to do so for the third time in an innings (following two warnings) will result in a five-run penalty being imposed against the fielding team.

Wasim Khan, ICC General Manager – Cricket said: “We are continually looking at ways to speed up the pace of play across international cricket.

“The stop clock trial in white ball international cricket follows the introduction of a successful new playing condition in 2022, which resulted in the fielding team only being allowed four fielders outside of the inner circle if they were not in a position to bowl the first ball of their final over in the stipulated time.

“The outcomes of the stop clock trial will be assessed at the end of the trial period.”

Head and Akter voted ICC Players of the Month for November

The International Cricket Council (ICC) today revealed the ICC Men’s and Women’s Player of the Month award winners for November 2023 after shortlists were announced on Thursday last week.

Australia’s Travis Head is crowned the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for November after orchestrating their memorable march to Cricket World Cup glory with Player of the Match contributions in both the semi-final win over South Africa, and the blockbuster final victory over India in Ahmedabad.

Spin maestro Nahida Akter lost out in October’s voting, but clinches the ICC Women’s Player of the Month award for November for her wicket-taking exploits during last month’s competitive ODI series victory over Pakistan on home soil.

Head was nominated for his first ICC Men’s Player of the Month award back in June 2023 for his role as chief architect in Australia’s ICC World Test Championship Final victory over India. He goes one better this month, winning the award after two remarkable performances in the knockout stages inspired their sixth Men’s Cricket World Cup title.

South Africa were the first opponents to be undone by Head’s brilliance in the semi-final showdown in Kolkata. Bowling first, the spinner removed the dangerous Heinrich Klaasen and Marco Jansen in consecutive balls, limiting the Proteas score to a modest 212. With bat in hand, the opener then set a brisk pace in response, and top scored with 62 from 48 balls as Australia chased down the target with three wickets in hand.

His crowning glory however came in the final triumph over India. An economical bowling display and a phenomenal running catch in the outfield to dismiss Rohit Sharma preceded an outstanding performance with the bat that clinched the silverware.

With 241 set for victory, Head cemented his growing reputation as a player for the big occasion by hitting a sparkling 137 in 120 balls to see Australia overcome the tournament hosts.

Reacting to his award win, Head commented, “It’s been an incredible 12 months for the team which it has been a real privilege to be a part of. The way we have navigated a home summer, away trips to India, England, South Africa, India and the World Cup has been great credit to Pat, the players and the staff.

“I was fortunate that they kept the faith in me for the World Cup after breaking my hand, so it was a great opportunity for me to pay them back. I felt the World Cup was amongst the best I have ever batted, so maybe having a rest before every campaign is the key.

“It’s a great honour to be recognised with this award, but it is a team effort. Without my team-mates across all formats this wouldn’t have happened; so these types of awards are as much for them as they are for me.”ICC Women's POTM – November 2023

ICC Women’s POTM – November 2023

Nahida Akter also celebrates her maiden Player of the Month crown after tearing through opposition batters in her side’s closely fought victory over Pakistan in Mirpur last month.

The first ODI encounter of the series saw Akter claim three wickets for 30 with a consistent spell of pressure bowling. With Pakistan chasing down a lowly 82 for victory, the spinner kept the contest competitive, claiming the wickets of Sidra Ameen, Bismah Maroof and Aliya Riaz to trouble the tourists in their charge to victory.

A quieter second match followed before Akter once more starred in the decisive third fixture. A superb economical 10-over spell produced three wickets for 26 runs as the tourists stumbled to 166 for nine in their 50 overs, laying the foundations for Akter’s teammates to seal the series with the bat in a seven-wicket victory.

Akter claimed the Player of the Series accolade after having taken seven wickets at an impressive average of 14.14 across the three matches.

ICC Women’s Player of the Month, Akter said, “This is a moment to cherish. To be recognised by such a distinguished panel of cricket experts means a lot and winning the ICC Women Player of the Month award will be a massive source of inspiration and motivation for me.

“We have played some amazing cricket in recent months and I am so happy to have contributed to the successes we have tasted as a team. I must thank my captain, coaches and teammates for always believing in me and that has allowed me to play my natural game against quality opponents and perform under pressure.”

Head and Akter emerged victorious from a process which gathered votes from global fans registered at icc-cricket.com and a specialist panel comprising ICC Hall of Famers, former international players, and media representatives.

Head overcame fellow World Cup winner Glenn Maxwell and record-breaking Indian bowler Mohammed Shami to claim the November crown, while Akter wins from two other stars of the same series, compatriot Fargana Hoque and Pakistan’s Sadia Iqbal.

Khelo India: Losing a leg was not a deterrent for 200m champion Rajesh

New Delhi, 12 December 2023: When the 200m final of the T64 category started at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Monday, it was being telecast live on a big screen at Annai Vailankanni College in Tambaram, Tamil Nadu, thousands of kilometers away from here because one of the blade runners of this college, Rajesh K was participating in the first-ever Khelo India Para Games.

The college administration wanted every child to see Rajesh performing because his story is that of immense courage.

Rajesh lit up the track of JLN Stadium with his performance and won the gold medal in 200 meters. After this, Rajesh also took part in long jump on Tuesday but he finished disappointingly in fifth place. But there is no place for words like disappointment or frustration in the personal life of Rajesh, who lost his leg at the age of just 6 months.

The personal life of Rajesh, who practices under the supervision of Nitin Choudhary at the Sai Center in Gandhinagar (Gujarat), is full of such incidents that would make anyone sigh, but he never considered himself an object of pity. Rajesh wants to register his name in history.

Rajesh said, “I want to earn a name like India’s gold medal winning Paralympian Mariyappan Thangavelu. I want to be like German para long jump athlete Markus Rehm, who made the world record in the T64 long jump category. Disability never became an obstacle in my path. I never let it affect me and always thought like a normal person. I have never made myself an object of pity.”

When asked whether he was disabled by birth, Rajesh said, “No, I am not disabled by birth. I was born a normal child but due to an infection in my legs, I had to undergo treatment. While giving the injection, the needle broke in my leg and the poison spread due to this. Then, following the advice of my parents, the doctors amputated my leg to save my life,” recalled Rajesh of his agony.

Rajesh told that at the age of 10 months, he got his first artificial leg, with the help of which he started living his future life, but when he was in class seventh, his parents left him.

According to Rajesh, “Life seemed normal after getting an artificial leg but then my parents separated with mutual consent. We did not get anyone’s support. My twin brother and I were forced to live with our grandfather and grandmother. My grandfather raised us by driving an auto.”

On how he got into running despite having artificial legs, 24-year-old Rajesh said, “I have been doing blade running for the last five or six years. I started my journey in 2018 but in the year 2016, I was inspired by watching Mariyappan Thangavelu winning the T42 category high jump gold medal on television at the Rio Paralympics and since then I had decided that I too want to become an Olympian.”

Rajesh further said, “One day a friend of mine called and said that your dream of playing for the country can be fulfilled. You meet Vijay, Tamil Nadu’s first wheelchair player. When I met him at Nehru Stadium, he advised me to take up blade running. I started practicing in 2018 and played Nationals twice. I won the bronze medal in the 21st Para Nationals held in Pune in March 2023. After this, the Tamil Nadu government gave me a new blade, which costs Rs 7.50 lakh.”

Rajesh told that his aim is to participate in Paralympics and Para Asian Games. “I want to win medal for the country in Paralympic and Para Asian Games. Right now I am preparing for the Para Nationals to be held in Goa from 9th to 15th January. There is less cold there, so my performance will be better. After this I want to prepare for the Grand Prix to be held in Dubai in February 2024.”

After going down in four consecutive games, the Bulls needed an inspiring performance from their star player and Kandola delivered 11 points to hand the Bulls a 38-36 victory over the U.P. Yoddhas on Monday.

Speaking about his performance, Bengaluru Bulls’ Head Coach Randhir Singh Sehrawat said, “Before the match, Vikash told me that he would win the game for us. I was very happy to hear that. He is a very talented player. The Bengaluru Bulls are known for making comebacks and hopefully, we’ll win our last game in Bengaluru.”

Meanwhile, Vikash Kandola expressed that the team’s performance is more important than his own, “My Super 10 was not important. It was more important for the team to win in front of our home fans. Our coach has been giving me confidence. He keeps telling me that I will play well. This was a kind of a do-or-die match for us because had we lost three consecutive games at home then we would have lost confidence for the rest of the season.”

The Head Coach also said that he didn’t let the team lose its morale after a difficult start in the league, “I made sure that the team’s morale didn’t go down. We have 17 more league games to go. The performance depends on team morale. If morale is down then performance will also go down.”

Preview for the matches on Wednesday:

The Telugu Titans will be hoping to get on board for the first time this season when they take on Tamil Thalaivas on Wednesday. However, the Thalaivas’ raiders Narender and Ajinkya Pawar have been in tremendous form and they will pose a strong challenge to the Titans.

Meanwhile, the Bengaluru Bulls will be aiming to sign off their home leg on a high when they go up against the Jaipur Pink Panthers. But, the Panthers are high on confidence after pulling off a thrilling victory against Gujarat Giants on Monday.

NBA: Clippers Overcome Trail Blazers 132-127 for Fourth Straight Victory

LOS ANGELES – The Los Angeles Clippers extended their winning streak to four games with a 132-127 victory over the Portland Trail Blazers on Monday night. Led by Kawhi Leonard’s 34 points, the Clippers continued their strong form, improving to 9-3 since breaking a season-worst six-game losing streak.

Paul George and James Harden were also key contributors for the Clippers. George finished with 20 points, eight rebounds, and eight assists, while Harden added 20 points, seven rebounds, and seven assists. Ivica Zubac’s 18 points further bolstered the Clippers’ offense.

Coach Tyronn Lue praised Leonard’s performance, particularly noting his improved health and developing rhythm with teammates George and Harden.

The Trail Blazers, hampered by the absence of Deandre Ayton and Malcolm Brogdon due to right knee soreness, struggled to contain the Clippers. Anfernee Simons led Portland with a season-high 38 points, and rookie Shaedon Sharpe added 27 points. Despite their efforts, the Blazers fell to an 0-8 road record against Western Conference teams.

Simons, who recently returned from an 18-game absence due to injury, was flawless from the free-throw line and made a career-high 13 free throws. The Blazers also excelled from the three-point line, making a season-high 19 three-pointers.

Despite the loss, Blazers coach Chauncey Billups commended his team’s fighting spirit, saying, “We played good, man. We just keep scrapping no matter what.”

The game saw multiple lead changes in the fourth quarter, with the Blazers briefly taking the lead. However, clutch free throws by Terance Mann and Leonard, along with key baskets by George, helped the Clippers secure the win. Leonard remained focused on the team’s overall performance, expressing satisfaction with the Clippers’ current rhythm.

The high-scoring third quarter was pivotal, with the Clippers ending on a 12-5 run to take a 105-99 lead. Despite the Blazers’ impressive three-point shooting in the quarter, the Clippers managed to regain control, thanks in part to Russell Westbrook’s seven straight points.

Portland managed to erase a double-digit deficit in the second quarter and briefly took the lead, but George’s basket gave the Clippers a narrow lead at halftime. The Clippers had started strong, shooting 79% in the first quarter.

Harden’s one-handed dunk in the third, his first since joining the Clippers, was a highlight, with the veteran guard reminding everyone, “I can still dunk.”

Billups reflected on the team-building process, acknowledging the challenges but maintaining a focus on winning.

Looking ahead, the Trail Blazers return home to host the Utah Jazz in a five-game homestand, while the Clippers host the Sacramento Kings in a back-to-back matchup.

This victory for the Clippers showcased their offensive depth and resilience, while the Trail Blazers, despite the setback, displayed promising individual performances and a fighting spirit.

NBA:Sacramento Kings Set Franchise Record with 25 Three-Pointers in 131-118 Win Over Nets

SACRAMENTO, Calif. – The Sacramento Kings dazzled with a record-breaking shooting performance, sinking 25 three-pointers in a 131-118 victory over the Brooklyn Nets on Monday night. This display of sharpshooting set a new franchise record for the Kings.

De’Aaron Fox led the Kings with 28 points and nine assists, showcasing his all-around game. Domantas Sabonis added a double-double with 15 points and 16 rebounds, along with nine assists, underscoring the team’s high level of play. Keegan Murray and Malik Monk also made significant contributions, scoring 24 and 21 points, respectively.

The Kings’ exceptional team play was evident in their 38 assists, a season-high for the team, reflecting their effective ball movement and shooting prowess. “We’re a team that can shoot the basketball, and it was evident tonight,” said Kings coach Mike Brown.

Sacramento shot an impressive 25 of 45 (55.6%) from beyond the arc, breaking their previous record of 23 three-pointers in a game. Fox and Trey Lyles led the way, each hitting five three-pointers. Monk, who also nailed four three-pointers, compared this season’s offense to last year’s, calling it the best in the NBA.

The Nets, led by Mikal Bridges with 22 points, were one of the Eastern Conference’s hottest teams coming into the game, with six wins in their previous seven games. However, they struggled against the Kings’ aggressive defense and sharp shooting.

Sacramento maintained a comfortable lead for most of the game, although Brooklyn managed to close the gap to six points with six minutes remaining. Harrison Barnes’s timely three-pointer helped the Kings pull away once more.

Fox set the tone early for the Kings with a corner three-pointer in the first quarter, and the team never looked back. They limited Brooklyn to just 18 points in the first quarter and held a steady lead throughout the game.

After the Nets narrowed the margin in the third quarter, Sacramento regained control with a series of dynamic plays, including a thunderous dunk by Monk and a three-pointer from Murray. The Kings’ effective ball movement led to many open looks, which they capitalized on.

Looking ahead, the Nets face a challenging game against the Phoenix Suns, while the Kings take on the Los Angeles Clippers.

This win for the Kings highlighted their offensive firepower and teamwork, showcasing their potential as a formidable force in the league. The Nets, on the other hand, will look to regroup and regain their form in their upcoming games.

NBA:Houston Rockets Extend Spurs’ Losing Streak to 17 Games, Win 93-82

HOUSTON – The San Antonio Spurs set an unwelcome franchise record with their 17th consecutive loss, falling 93-82 to the Houston Rockets on Monday night. Despite the defeat, rookie Victor Wembanyama remained optimistic about the team’s future.

Wembanyama, the top overall pick, contributed 15 points, 18 rebounds, and five blocks, including a notable dunk over Houston’s Alperen Sengun. However, his efforts were insufficient to end the Spurs’ losing streak, which has persisted since their Nov. 2 win over Phoenix.

The Rockets secured their 10th consecutive home victory and their third straight win overall, with Tari Eason leading the charge off the bench. Eason recorded a season-high 18 points and 14 rebounds, significantly impacting the game for Houston.

Houston coach Ime Udoka praised his team’s defensive effort, which compensated for a less effective offensive performance. A critical moment came when Wembanyama’s tip-in brought San Antonio within four points with about four minutes left, but Fred VanVleet’s subsequent 3-pointer and Sengun’s block swung momentum back in Houston’s favor. Eason’s dunk and another 3-pointer from VanVleet sealed the win for the Rockets.

Udoka also lauded Eason’s performance, highlighting his ability to provide a much-needed spark for the team. VanVleet and Sengun contributed 16 and 15 points, respectively, to the Rockets’ victory.

The Spurs struggled with their shooting, particularly from 3-point range, going 5 of 41 (12%). Keldon Johnson and Devin Vassell had particularly challenging nights from beyond the arc. Spurs coach Gregg Popovich expressed his sympathy for the team’s shooting woes, noting their growth in other areas despite the lack of success in scoring.

Johnson, addressing the difficulty of the losing streak, remained committed to maintaining a positive attitude and competitiveness. The Rockets, meanwhile, led by Eason’s scoring, managed to hold off a late surge from the Spurs, who closed the gap to 77-73 with about 6½ minutes left, following a 7-3 run.

The third quarter saw Houston pull ahead with key 3-pointers from Sengun and Jabari Smith Jr., leading to a 69-62 advantage entering the fourth quarter. Rookie Amen Thompson, the fourth overall pick, returned for the Spurs after missing 13 games due to injury, contributing two points and five rebounds.

Looking ahead, the Spurs will host consecutive home games against the Los Angeles Lakers, while the Rockets prepare to face Memphis.

This game underscored the challenges facing the Spurs as they navigate a lengthy losing streak, contrasted by the Rockets’ ability to capitalize on their home-court advantage and depth, particularly from their bench.

NBA: Luka Doncic’s 35 Points Lead Mavericks Past Grizzlies 120-113 Amid Injury Challenges

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Dallas Mavericks, led by Luka Doncic’s 35 points, overcame a string of injuries to secure a 120-113 win against the Memphis Grizzlies on Monday night. The victory marked their third consecutive win, highlighting the team’s resilience and depth.

Doncic’s performance was complemented by Dereck Lively II, who notched a double-double with 16 points and 16 rebounds. Jaden Hardy’s 19 points off the bench and Dante Exum’s 16 points also played significant roles in the Mavericks’ success. Dallas managed this win despite missing key players, including Kyrie Irving, the team’s second-leading scorer.

Hardy’s contribution was notable for his efficiency from the three-point line, a testament to his confidence in shooting from distance. “When I’m out there and the ball is finding me, it’s just being ready to shoot,” Hardy said.

The Grizzlies, despite a season-high 41 points from Jaren Jackson Jr. and 28 from Desmond Bane, struggled to find consistent offensive support. Vince Williams Jr. was the only other Memphis player to reach double figures, illustrating the team’s current offensive woes.

Memphis coach Taylor Jenkins acknowledged the team’s performance issues, highlighting the need for more collective effort and not just relying on Jackson and Bane.

Dallas established a significant lead early in the fourth quarter and successfully countered every Memphis attempt to close the gap. Notably, Doncic’s performance included his 1,000th career 3-pointer.

The Mavericks faced additional challenges with injuries, as Tim Hardaway, a vital contributor, missed the game due to back spasms, and Derrick Jones Jr. left the game early. These absences meant Dallas was without players who average a combined 40 points per game.

For Memphis, the absence of leading scorer Ja Morant, who is nearing the end of a 25-game suspension, continues to impact their scoring, as they average only 106 points per game.

Lively’s impressive rebounding was a key factor in Dallas controlling the boards and capitalizing on second-chance points. Mavs coach Jason Kidd praised Lively’s effort, saying, “I just asked him to get 15 and he got 16.”

The Grizzlies are now facing a challenging season, with a 1-10 home record and a low ranking in the Western Conference. The team eagerly awaits Morant’s return on Dec. 19, hoping it will provide a much-needed boost.

Desmond Bane reflected on the team’s need to regroup and improve execution, stating, “There wasn’t too much to be said after the game. Come in (Tuesday), Get our work. Refresh our minds and be better when we get another opportunity.”

Looking ahead, the Mavericks will host the Los Angeles Lakers, while the Grizzlies travel to face Houston.

This game showcased the Mavericks’ ability to overcome adversity and the individual brilliance of players like Doncic and Lively, while the Grizzlies continue to navigate a challenging period, looking forward to regaining their full strength.

NBA: Giannis Antetokounmpo Powers Bucks to 133-129 Overtime Victory Against Bulls

MILWAUKEE (AP) – The Milwaukee Bucks clinched a hard-fought 133-129 win over the Chicago Bulls in overtime on Monday night, propelled by Giannis Antetokounmpo’s standout performance. Antetokounmpo’s 32 points and 12 rebounds were crucial in overcoming the Bulls’ challenge, as the Bucks bounced back from their recent loss in the In-Season Tournament semifinals.

The game was a high-scoring affair, with Brook Lopez and Malik Beasley each adding 19 points, and Bobby Portis contributing 17 for Milwaukee. The Bulls, despite a strong showing led by DeMar DeRozan with 41 points and Coby White’s 33 points, couldn’t sustain their four-game winning streak. DeRozan’s performance was particularly notable, as he became the second Bulls player since Michael Jordan to score at least 40 points and 10 assists in a game.

Overtime began with Chicago taking a brief lead, but the Bucks responded with a critical seven-point run, highlighted by Antetokounmpo’s layup. Milwaukee’s victory, however, wasn’t secured until the final moments, as missed free throws left the game within reach for the Bulls. Damian Lillard’s late free throws finally sealed the win for the Bucks.

Bucks coach Adrian Griffin praised the Bulls’ resilience and his team’s ability to get stops when needed. Antetokounmpo, who improved his shooting in the second half and overtime, acknowledged the need for smart shot selection, especially when drawing significant attention from opponents.

The game was tied at the end of regulation, thanks to DeRozan’s floater, countering Lillard’s earlier free throws. Antetokounmpo and DeRozan traded crucial plays in the final minutes, with the former hitting free throws and the latter responding with a dunk and more free throws.

Bulls coach Billy Donovan expressed pride in his team’s competitive spirit and ability to bounce back from deficits, despite falling short in overtime. The Bulls had rallied from a nine-point halftime deficit to come within two points at the end of the third quarter.

The Bucks’ efficient shooting, especially from beyond the arc, was a highlight in the first half. Antetokounmpo, despite taking only two shots in the first half, contributed with six assists, demonstrating his versatility.

Looking ahead, the Bulls face a quick turnaround with a game against the Denver Nuggets, while the Bucks prepare to host the Indiana Pacers.

This game showcased the dynamic capabilities of both teams, with the Bucks’ balanced attack and Antetokounmpo’s leadership edging out the Bulls’ spirited comeback led by DeRozan and White.

NBA: Zion Williamson Leads Pelicans to 121-107 Win Over Timberwolves with Season-High 36 Points

NEW ORLEANS – Zion Williamson’s dynamic performance powered the New Orleans Pelicans to a 121-107 victory over the Minnesota Timberwolves on Monday night. Williamson, bouncing back from a lackluster outing in the NBA In-Season Tournament, scored a season-high 36 points, while CJ McCollum’s crucial fourth-quarter three-pointers bolstered the Pelicans’ offense.

The game was a significant rebound for the Pelicans, who were coming off a heavy 133-89 defeat to the Los Angeles Lakers. Williamson, in particular, faced criticism following that loss for his subdued play against the Lakers, but he responded emphatically against the Timberwolves.

Williamson’s aggressive approach paid off as he repeatedly drove to the basket, showcasing his strength and finesse against Minnesota’s top-rated defense, including center Rudy Gobert. His standout moment came with a double-pump floater as he was fouled, extending the Pelicans’ lead late in the game. He finished with an impressive 13-of-17 shooting and was successful in 10 of 12 free-throw attempts.

CJ McCollum praised Williamson’s performance, highlighting his ability to score over Gobert. Williamson’s resilience in the face of criticism was also commended by his teammates, with McCollum acknowledging the forward’s sharp, assertive, and locked-in approach.

The Timberwolves, missing leading scorer Anthony Edwards due to injury, relied on Karl-Anthony Towns, who provided 17 points and 12 rebounds but fouled out with over two minutes remaining. Mike Conley and Naz Reid also contributed 17 points each for Minnesota, which had been on a strong run, winning nine of its previous ten games.

Brandon Ingram and Jonas Valanciunas were key contributors for New Orleans, scoring 20 points and 14 points with 13 rebounds, respectively. This victory marked the Pelicans’ first win in three meetings with the Timberwolves this season.

The Timberwolves struggled in the fourth quarter, taking nearly four minutes to score their first basket. Despite briefly narrowing the gap, the Pelicans, led by Williamson’s dominance, maintained control, with Ingram and McCollum providing crucial support.

Timberwolves guard Jordan McLaughlin acknowledged Williamson’s impact, noting his forceful and downhill play. The first half was closely contested, with Williamson, Ingram, and McCollum each scoring double digits for New Orleans, and Ingram’s long-range bank shot giving the Pelicans a seven-point halftime lead. McLaughlin himself hit a notable half-court shot at the end of the third quarter.

Looking ahead, the Timberwolves face a challenging game against Dallas, while the Pelicans will take on Washington.

This victory for the Pelicans highlighted Williamson’s resilience and the team’s ability to bounce back from adversity, setting a positive tone for their upcoming games.

NBA: Denver Nuggets Rebound to Beat Atlanta Hawks 129-122, Ending Skid

ATLANTA – The Denver Nuggets snapped their three-game losing streak with a 129-122 victory over the Atlanta Hawks on Monday night, fueled by strong performances from Jamal Murray and Nikola Jokic. Despite a late rally from the Hawks, the Nuggets managed to hold on for the win.

Jamal Murray led the Nuggets with 29 points, while Nikola Jokic found his form, contributing 25 points. The game also marked a significant performance from Bogdan Bogdanovic of the Hawks, who set career highs with 40 points and 10 three-pointers, albeit in a losing effort.

Bogdanovic’s late-game heroics, which included sinking three 3-pointers in the final two minutes, brought the Hawks within striking distance. However, the Nuggets, who led by as much as 20 points in the fourth quarter, managed to stave off the comeback. Jokic, reflecting on the game’s tense moments, emphasized the importance of securing the win and getting the necessary stops.

The contest also served as a reunion for former Serbian national team colleagues Jokic and Bogdanovic. Jokic expressed his delight at seeing Bogdanovic perform free from knee injuries, recalling their time together in international competitions.

For the Nuggets, rookie Julian Strawther had a standout game, scoring a career-high 22 points, including six three-pointers, and leading the game with five steals. Aaron Gordon added a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds.

The game had its share of drama, with Murray initially leaving the court due to a rolled ankle but later returning to contribute significantly. In contrast, the Hawks faced a setback when star player Trae Young was ejected for accruing two technical fouls in the third quarter, leaving coach Quin Snyder to adapt without one of his key players.

Despite his recent shooting struggles, Jokic showed why he is a two-time MVP, shooting efficiently from the field and nearly achieving a triple-double. The Hawks, meanwhile, were missing key players Jalen Johnson and De’Andre Hunter due to injuries.

The first half was competitive, with Bogdanovic and Dejounte Murray propelling the Hawks early on. However, Strawther’s second-quarter surge helped the Nuggets take a 65-62 lead into halftime, overcoming the Hawks’ initial advantage.

Both teams now look ahead to their next games, with the Nuggets set to face Chicago and the Hawks traveling to Toronto.

This victory for Denver showcased their resilience and ability to close out games under pressure, while Atlanta, despite the loss, demonstrated their potential to challenge even without key players on the court.

NBA: Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Leads Thunder to 134-120 Victory Over Jazz

OKLAHOMA CITY – The Oklahoma City Thunder clinched a decisive 134-120 win over the Utah Jazz on Monday night, with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s 30-point performance leading the charge. The Thunder’s efficiency and teamwork were on full display as they shot 52% from the field and tallied 35 assists.

Gilgeous-Alexander, who also contributed seven assists, demonstrated his ability to balance scoring and playmaking, a skill he continually strives to refine. Josh Giddey complemented this effort with a well-rounded game, scoring 12 points, grabbing 10 rebounds, and dishing out eight assists in just 24 minutes. His adaptation to the Jazz’s defensive tactics, which included making himself more available around the hoop, was crucial to his success.

Thunder coach Mark Daigneault praised Giddey’s evolving game and also highlighted Ousmane Dieng’s significant contribution off the bench. Dieng scored a season-high 18 points on efficient shooting, validating the experience gained during his time with the G League affiliate Oklahoma City Blue.

Chet Holmgren also played a key role, adding 16 points and eight rebounds, as the Thunder secured their fourth win in five games, solidifying their position in the Western Conference standings.

The Jazz, on the other hand, struggled without their leading scorer, Lauri Markkanen, who missed his eighth straight game. Keyonte George, a rookie from Baylor, stepped up with a season-best 30 points, while Collin Sexton added 20 points, and Simone Fontecchio scored a season-high 19. However, Jordan Clarkson, Utah’s second-leading scorer this season, was limited to just eight points on 3-for-13 shooting.

The Thunder established a commanding lead by halftime, with Isaiah Joe’s corner three-pointer at the buzzer stretching the lead to 66-52. The third quarter saw the Thunder shooting an impressive 65% from the field, further extending their lead to 111-75, thanks in part to Gilgeous-Alexander’s perfect shooting during the period.

Gilgeous-Alexander emphasized the team’s approach of not underestimating any opponent, regardless of their record, stating that any team in the NBA can be formidable on any given night.

Looking ahead, the Jazz will host the New York Knicks on Wednesday, while the Thunder are set to visit the Sacramento Kings on Thursday.

This game highlighted the Thunder’s collective strength and the standout performances of their young core, while the Jazz, still adjusting to the absence of Markkanen, will look to regroup in their upcoming fixtures.

NBA: Miami Heat Squeeze Past Charlotte Hornets 116-114 in Thriller

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – In a closely contested game, the Miami Heat edged out the Charlotte Hornets 116-114 on Monday night, thanks to Duncan Robinson’s sharpshooting and a standout performance from Kevin Love off the bench. Jimmy Butler and Caleb Martin also made significant contributions to the Heat’s victory, which broke their recent slump.

Duncan Robinson was the star of the show, hitting five 3-pointers to accumulate 24 points. His eagerness to rebound from a previous poor shooting performance against the Cleveland Cavaliers was evident in his aggressive play. Kevin Love, coming off the bench, had a season-high 19 points, hitting critical threes and adding depth to Miami’s offense.

The Hornets, despite a phenomenal 34-point effort from Terry Rozier, including eight 3-pointers, fell just short. Rozier’s last-second halfcourt attempt, which could have swung the game, unfortunately hit the backboard and bounced away.

Jimmy Butler added 23 points and eight assists, while Caleb Martin, facing his former team, had 20 points and nine rebounds in his best game since leaving Charlotte. Jaime Jaquez, contributing 18 points, also played a key role before fouling out late in the game.

Miami’s coach Erik Spoelstra praised Kevin Love for his leadership and impact, especially in combination with Jimmy Butler. The Heat led for most of the game and had a 12-point advantage going into the fourth quarter. However, the Hornets, fueled by Rozier’s sharpshooting, quickly reduced the deficit to one point.

The game’s closing stages were a back-and-forth affair. Kyle Lowry’s three-pointer, Love’s putback, and Robinson’s drives kept the Heat ahead. Charlotte’s resilience was evident as Rozier’s late 3-pointer and subsequent free throws kept them in contention.

In a strategic move, Miami decided to foul Rozier instead of allowing him to attempt a game-tying three. This decision, supported by Butler, demonstrated Miami’s adaptability and tactical awareness under pressure. Charlotte, without timeouts, was left to attempt a desperate final shot that ultimately missed its mark.

The teams are set to meet again Wednesday night in Miami, promising another exciting encounter.

NBA: New York Knicks Triumph Over Toronto Raptors 136-130 Amidst Injury Challenges

NEW YORK – The New York Knicks, facing a challenging period without key player Mitchell Robinson, displayed a remarkable balance in their gameplay to secure a 136-130 victory over the Toronto Raptors on Monday night.

Julius Randle spearheaded the Knicks’ effort with an impressive 34 points, while Quentin Grimes, contributing a season-high 19 points, and RJ Barrett, adding 27 points, were instrumental in the win. The Knicks’ adaptability was put to the test as they adjusted their lineup in the absence of Robinson, who suffered a stress fracture in his left ankle requiring at least eight weeks of recovery.

Jalen Brunson also played a crucial role, scoring 21 points and dishing out nine assists. Despite losing Robinson, the NBA leader in offensive rebounds, the Knicks demonstrated their depth and resilience. Randle acknowledged Robinson’s importance but remained optimistic about the team’s ability to adapt.

The game was intensely competitive until the fourth quarter when the Knicks’ bench players, notably Grimes and Josh Hart, propelled the team forward. Grimes’ critical three-pointer and Hart’s scoring streak during a 7-0 run broke the tie and pushed the Knicks to a 115-108 lead. Their continued efforts extended the lead, with Hart finishing the game with 16 points.

Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau praised the bench unit’s performance, emphasizing the need for collective effort and synergy, especially in the absence of reserve guard Immanuel Quickley due to knee soreness.

The Raptors, despite a season-high 29 points from OG Anunoby and significant contributions from Scottie Barnes, Pascal Siakam, and Dennis Schroder, who each scored 20 points, could not withstand the Knicks’ offensive surge. Anunoby noted the game’s high-scoring nature and the tough shots made by the Knicks.

The Knicks, coming off losses to Eastern Conference leaders Milwaukee and Boston, showed their capability to bounce back strongly. They now face a series of road games, starting with a trip to Utah, before returning to Madison Square Garden later in December.

Jericho Sims started at center for the Knicks, with Isaiah Hartenstein continuing his role with the second unit. Hartenstein delivered a solid performance with 11 points and eight rebounds, while Sims contributed seven rebounds.

The Raptors, facing their fourth consecutive loss, two of which were against New York, now look forward to hosting Atlanta for a two-game series.

This victory for the Knicks underlines their depth and resilience in overcoming injury setbacks and maintaining a competitive edge, setting a positive tone as they embark on their upcoming road trip.

NBA: Philadelphia 76ers crushed Washington Wizards by 146-101

In an extraordinary display of dominance, the Philadelphia 76ers, led by a resilient Joel Embiid, crushed the Washington Wizards 146-101 in a one-sided affair on Monday night. Embiid, who had been questionable for the game due to a knee concern, delivered a stellar performance with 34 points and 10 rebounds, showcasing his unwavering talent and commitment.

The 76ers established their supremacy right from the tip-off, with Tyrese Maxey igniting a stunning 14-0 run through a barrage of three-pointers. Philadelphia’s overwhelming start set the tone for the entire game, and they never looked back. By halftime, the 76ers had amassed a daunting 29-point lead, with the scoreboard reading 75-46, mirroring their previous encounter against the Wizards when they also scored 75 by the break.

Maxey’s sharpshooting was a highlight of the night, as he drained five 3-pointers to total 24 points, contributing significantly to the team’s victory. The 76ers’ three-point shooting was a crucial factor, as they converted 20 of their attempts from beyond the arc, underscoring their offensive prowess.

On the other side, the Wizards, struggling with a 3-19 record, found themselves overwhelmed. Despite Kyle Kuzma’s team-high 21 points, Washington could not counter Philadelphia’s offensive onslaught or find a rhythm in their gameplay. Wizards coach Wes Unseld Jr. expressed his frustration, noting the team’s need to be more resilient, especially in difficult stretches.

The game also served as a testament to Philadelphia’s depth and strategic gameplay, with players like Patrick Beverley contributing valuable points. Coach Nick Nurse’s emphasis on assertiveness and consistent performance was evident as the 76ers maintained their intensity throughout the game.

For Embiid, the game was another chapter in his remarkable season, as he has been averaging 33.3 points and 11.5 rebounds. His ability to score 30 points in eight straight games underscores his status as a top contender in the league.

The win positions the 76ers favorably for their upcoming fixtures against teams with less impressive records, providing an opportunity to strengthen their standing further. Meanwhile, the Wizards face the challenge of regrouping and finding form as they prepare to host New Orleans.

This game, marked by the 76ers’ explosive start and sustained dominance, will be remembered for Philadelphia’s display of sheer basketball excellence and Embiid’s inspirational performance despite his recent injury scare.
